I bought some yesterday from TK Maxx (a brand called Ellie, I think). They looked great before they were put on. Once on, my legs appear to have gained approximately a stone each. My knees actually look fat and pudgy. This is not on. The knit is also stretched so wide that you can see shiny lines where the lycra is catching the light. I bought medium/large which according to the packet is perfect for my size/weight, so that's not the issue.

I have never had this effect with regular black opaques (even the knit/merino version).

Can anyone recommend any others? They have to be completely opaque. I have checked M&S and the only grey version online is a mere 40 denier. I'm looking for 100.

Falke Cotton Touch are lovely tights. I have a pair of grey ones: they are flattering, very hard-wearing and really comfortable, with a shaped heel. I did go through the toe (after a lot of use) but I liked them so much that I darned it and the darn has held. I have no idea what denier they are, but they are completely opaque.

Wolfod do some great ones. I got mine from house of Fraser. Debenhams have good ones too, and I get the mixed pack of grey/blue/black from John Lewis too which last forever.

There are some in M & S. Part of the Heatgen range, warm, soft and flattering. www.marksandspencer.com/100-denier-heatgen-opaque-tights-1-pair-pack/p/p22188523

Just saw that you're looking for 100denier. The woolford ones won't be that, but are called Matt velvet at feel and look that thick.

I've just bought some from BHS. Lovely and soft and under £6.

I like Tesco cotton rich opaque "wooly" tights. But I am wearing grey Elle 40 denier tighrs from TKM right now and love them.

Boden chunky tights are lovely to wear but very pricey unless in the sale. They do a grey and teal pack which I treated myself to in 40 percent off sale the other week. Both nice colours but the grey is more versatile.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will begin to investigate further.
