Christmas Party Outfit for the non-dressy...

Yes, I am panicking already! Please help me find an outfit for the very posh work Christmas party, that can be dressed down afterwards.
I don't really do dresses and I don't enjoy getting all dressed up.
And I am short and fat - Apple, 20 in top, 16-18 bottom.

Help!

Do you prefer trousers or skirts? What's your budget?

tethersend · 17/10/2014 18:50

Do you want to wear heels or flats?

How do you feel about something like this?

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 17/10/2014 19:02

I prefer trousers but am ok with a skirt.

You're very kind, tethers, but I would look and feel ridiculous in that!

I quite like this blouse m.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Tops-T-shirts/Long-Sleeved-Tops/WA544/Womens-Velvet-Trim-Top.html

and I love the look of these shoes

I don't usually wear heels, so they need to be walkable.
Budget in total maybe £200, as long as the outfit can be worn again and doesn't end up just hanging in the cupboard.

No, honesty is good- knowing what you don't want will give us an idea of what you do Grin

Will have another look.

JavaSparrow · 17/10/2014 20:27

Watching with interest, although I am 20 all over. Blush.

tethersend · 17/10/2014 21:01

I know you said no dresses, but this is gorgeous, looks and feels v. expensive and is a bloody steal.

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 18/10/2014 10:17

I keep looking at that dress and might even order it - I just can't decide whether I can deal with the asymmetry of it yet. Thank you anyway, I would never have found that.

It's very flattering on.

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 18/10/2014 12:01

Does it really come up that big? I prefer the black to the blue, but it's only available I a 20.

Iheartautumn · 18/10/2014 12:05

A trouser suit?

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 18/10/2014 15:20

Ok, who bought the Mary Portas dress? It's not available in black any more Sad

I have the Mary portas dress. I would say sizing is true to generous, but it's a stretchy material and doesn't need to be skin tight so it's worth a try.

WipsGlitter · 18/10/2014 21:36

Dress is fab! The blouse us nice but not very dressy.

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 18/10/2014 21:58

Well, somebody Hmm bought the last dress in my size while I was still dithering...

I love the spotty blouse but realise it's just not dressy enough.

I have also realised that I am just not a dress person, so I have ordered a gorgeous silk blouse (no link, so you can't tell if we work together!). I will also treat myself to a new pair of good quality trousers and a cashmere cardi and dress the whole lot up with low heels and jewellery.

After party season I can take it all apart and dress it down for everyday. Job done.

Thanks for all the mind clearing suggestions!

This skirt, while pricy, is both comfy and stylish. The waistband is a thick jersey so will work on a size 20 apple. You can dress it up with a sparkly top and pretty shoes or you can dress it down with a long jersey and boots.

polyhymnia · 18/10/2014 22:25

You say party is very posh but not the type of venue and time of day etc, all of which are relevant to what's appropriate to wear. Where is your silky blouse from, btw?

Behoove · 18/10/2014 22:32

Late to the thread but this top is really flattering and dressy on. I'm a 16 but carry most of my weight on my tummy. The web picture doesn't do it justice, it has a low shimmer on the fabric. Lovely in with slim trousers and nice shoes.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/10/2014 22:36

I'm interested in this too. Our work do is in a small country hotel. Sit down meal with a decent covers band afterwards.

I can cope with a dress, but not anything over the knee preferably. I struggle with heels since breaking my ankle as a teenager.

I've no idea how to accessorise Blush

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 19/10/2014 09:00

Have a look at the site Behoove suggested, some lovely stuff there!
