Need something to wear for a family party but I'm rubbish at being smart

It's not an especially formal thing - a family party at a local venue - but there will be loads of people there I haven't seen for ages and I think I'm expected to make a bit of an effort.

I'm comfiest in more casual clothes and always feel a bit of a dogs dinner in anything smart - the exception was a beautiful Phase Eight dress I had for a wedding last year but that's too dressy for this.

I don't want to spend a fortune and if I can get something I can wear again that would be good. I'm wondering about a top of some kind to go with the cigarette pants and heels I've already got but would quite like a dress if I can find one that's smart but comfortable - not much to ask!

I'm 5'2, a size 12 - 14 hourglass and I like to look up to the minute but not obviously fashiony, my worst fear (in a fashion sense) is looking too try-hard.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I really like this Whistles top with cigarette trousers. I've worn mine a few times already and it felt effortless but smart.

I always feel a bit overdressed in a dress but find that if i team my dress with a smart jacket and clutch bag i feel less 'done up' marks and spencer have some great, up to date styles at the moment. look on fashion retailer websites for inspiration or pinterest Kenny Angell :)

I really like all of those - they are very much my style. I think lace makes things look a bit smarter without being too much. The colours of the Baukjen dresses are just what I would go for - I suit soft jewel colours or alternatively smoky shades but they aren't so easy to find this time of year.

I'm not sure my budget can stretch to Whistles of Baukjen prices but I'm sure I can find something similar in my price range, it was more ideas I needed so thanks for those.

I was on the M&S site last night actually and there were some nice dresses. Will have a look at your Pinterest now.
