I have one (child free) day shopping in Edinburgh -where should I go ?

It's tomorrow , so I don't have much time to research /plan .

So let me have your ideas please. I have access to all the usual chain stores where I live, so I was looking for something a bit different, if possible .

Anywhere I should try for lunch ?

I should add that I don't get out much without the children, so I am pathetically excited Blush

The area around the grass market is nice with small independent shops. Princes street has all the big names but usually visit John Lewis when I'm in Edinburgh

Essexgirlupnorth · 14/10/2014 19:47

For lunch there is the elephant cafe where JK Rowling started writing Harry potter it is in one of the bridges.
The museum of Scotland cafe is nice too.

George street area - lunch at Harvey Nichols. Or Jenners?

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 14/10/2014 19:53

If you are into sewing go to the Kitschy Coo shop.
I am trying to talk the family into a weekend in Edinburgh just to go there...

SofaCanary · 14/10/2014 20:04

Definitely a cocktail or three in Harvey Nicks.

KatyS36 · 14/10/2014 20:14

For clothes I would start at west end of George Street and walk along. Take in spacenk, jigsaw, hobbs, etc etc. Tapas for lunch at cafe andaluz then end at Harvey nicks and John Lewis

Would second grass market area if you want quirky independents, not necessarily clothing.

Enjoy Katy

KristinaM · 14/10/2014 20:48

Ooh thanks so much for all these ideas Smile

Sadly I am not into sewing, but I shall mention that shop to my friend who is

I would love a day shopping in Edinburgh lucky you!

I would head straight for the Duo shoeshop - not sure of address but you'd find it on google. I love their boots and shoes but they come in different width/calf size so really need tried on rather than Internet ordered.
Bit pricey but fun to try some pairs!

AgentProvocateur · 14/10/2014 22:01

Space NK in George St.

KristinaM · 14/10/2014 22:05

Thanks minty, I forgot about Duo.

Space NK followed by cocktails sounds lush

Better go up to the grass market first thing.....

Duo is on Castle Street.

George St is generally nicer than Princes Street so would second a wander there. There are some nice wee boutiques in Stockbridge too. Oh, and if you don't have one locally there's a Bravissimo on Multrees Walk

Magicrealism · 14/10/2014 22:07

I would also recommend George Street. Anthropologie is brilliant for a browse, and has lots of quirky accessories. I love the Edinburgh Jigsaw and the Whistles on George Street is also pretty good.
Cafe Andaluz (near Whistles) is great for a tapas lunch. I agree with Katy
Go to Jenners cafe for morning coffee (brilliant Florentines) and get a window seat overlooking Scott Monument and Princes Street Gardens.

nosleeptilever · 14/10/2014 22:08

I'd love a day shopping in Edinburgh... And I live here! Blush
I second the plan set out by katys36. But you could end up in valvona and corolla in multrees walk instead of Harvey nicks.
Enjoy!

nightswift · 14/10/2014 22:08

Glasgow! - sorry not helpful...

aylesburyduck · 15/10/2014 10:05

I am literally dying of jealousy Envy

Edinburgh is my favourite favourite city and I love shopping there. Always a pleasure never a chore.

Definitely seconding coffee in Jenners overlooking the monument and watching the world go by.

Enjoy your day Grin

OOAOML · 15/10/2014 12:04

Echo those who say George Street. Princes St seems to be mostly mobile phones, bargain and tartan tat shops these days.

HappyGirlNow · 15/10/2014 12:52

For lunch Cafe Andaluz for tapas or Amarone for Italian - both George St, both fantastic Grin

OOAOML · 15/10/2014 14:07

Ooh yes, Amarone is lovely.

buttercrumble · 15/10/2014 19:07

How did it go kristina I'm going to Edinburgh for the first time next week , and this thread has really got me looking forward to it Smile

herecomesthsun · 15/10/2014 20:27

It is some years since I have been to Edinburgh. But I remember getting some bad news from home when I was there on a conference which necessitated the buying of some lovely Gucci wedges from Harvey Nicks, with which I was very impressed, both the wedges and Harvey Nicks, and I would recommend the latter.

Thelovecats · 15/10/2014 21:32

Sorry OP for crashing thread, but has anyone used a personal shopper service in Edinburgh? I'm guessing john lewis, debenhams and house of Fraser all do it, but looking for recommendations to find a wedding guest outfit.
