Wedding guest - what should I wear?!

Please help, I haven't been to a wedding in years so I'm excited to be going to this one but I have not a clue what to wear. I don't know the bride and groom, (groom distant relative of DH), but I want to scrub up well. The wedding is an expensive city church followed by traditional private club affair. Day into night event.

Do people still wear hats? I'm 40, size 12 and don't want to look mumsy from the home counties. Understated contempory chic I'm thinking. How that translates into clothes I have no idea! Any help much appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi, are you anywhere near a debenhams? I've used their (free) personal shoppers in the past for things like this, they are fantastic! They make you a nice big cup of tea, and while you're drinking it they run around the shop and get complete outfits for you to try on! You can specify a budget too. You can book one online, on the debenhams website. If highly recommend them, they seem to know what suits your shape!

That sounds like what I need, thank you. I'm not near a Debenhams, but I could travel. We have a John Lewis nearish so will see if they do something similar. I'm rubbish at shopping, I often return empty handed but with a personal shopper I might feel the need to be a little more decisive.

Definitely worth trying a personal shopper if you can find one near you! I've been a few times and they've picked things that I wouldn't have given a second glance and they've looked amazing! Also, whenever I've worn personal shopper outfits I've always had a lot of compliments!
