Natural hair dyes for grey hair, suggestions please

I have quite long dark hair which I started colouring when I was in my early 20s due to it starting to go grey. Years of colouring have resulted in bad colour buildup. My hair looks dull and is quite dry at the ends. Couple of times I had my hair bleached to remove the colour but I always end up in square one as I have to get it dyed every 3-4 weeks because of greys :(

My sister who lives abroad uses a great olive oil based professional hair dye which doesn't damage her hair but, unfortunately, they don't sell it in this country.

I'd like to find something that will be reasonably good for my hair, ideally doesn't cost the earth and creates a nice natural colour. I'm so sick looking raven black even though I use mid brown shades normally. I want my hair to look like this :)

Please help!

I've used brown henna and my hair stays really healthy. Great coverage as well and very cheap! Lasts 3-4 weeks.

Get your sister you send you some ?

mirpuppet · 04/10/2014 17:50

I second getting you sister to send you some.

I use henna and indigo in my hair but it is a faff.

Fullsteamahead · 04/10/2014 17:54

I thought about it but it means she will have to become my permanent hair dye supplier and would have to send me parcels all the time. Lol. Not sure how shed feel about that!

I use naturtint from holland and barrett

Fullsteamahead · 04/10/2014 20:49

I've tried naturtint before, it didn't work well for me unfortunately, didn't cover my greys :(

What do you use at the moment? What product and what shade?

Fullsteamahead · 04/10/2014 22:39

I used Wella Koleston Perfect shade 6/77 Dark Blonde Brown for the last two colourings and then tried the oil based dye I mentioned above last time. The difference in the condition of my hair after using the oil dye was so impressive that I started thinking that I should try and switch to something like that

I am having some success with Daniel Field colours.

Fullsteamahead · 04/10/2014 23:10

I've been thinking about Daniel Field as an option even though I don't think it's oil based? What do you mean by "some" success?

Generally v. pleased.
The process is easy - no chemical smell. It goes on without too much problem.

The shades all come out a bit darker than advertised, but nice colours. Grey coverage is good, but I find that they fade on the grey after about four weeks. I use a colour conditioner (Aveda) to top up the colour. I prefer them to standard box dyes and they are infinitely cheaper than a salon visit which is what I was mostly doing before.

Hair dye can't be posted internationally unfortunately as there are some good suppliers of Russian beauty products on ebay who are based in Latvia etc.

I have the same problem as you, one thing I found helped is going much lighter than my ideal colour. I was told you should always go at least 1-2 shades lighter than what is indicated on the box and then drop down a shade again. You then end up with greys slightly lighter than your natural hair. Maybe deep condition the ends of your hair a few days before dying so it does not grab all the dye.

Off to dye my hair now, it's a right state as I've left it so long. Am going to get my best friend to get me your sisters dye next and if it's good I'll be filling my suitcase at New Year!

Oh, that's interesting. So do you think I'd be able to get it from Latvia? I've got a friend who will be going there soon.
