What casual shoes for 35 year old?

I have realised I have no idea what casual shoes I am meant to wear. I'm 35, 2 DC. I have some flat ballet pumps, and have just bought these from Clarks, which I hope are not Mum Boots, even if they are frumpy Clarks. But I think I need something between a sturdy ankle boot and a flimsy ballet pump. I feel a bit too old for Converse, and trainers don't feel right too (too casual and am too old). Uggs seem too teenager-y / very unpractical (what if it rains?) and they seem to just get dirty. I don't want anything with much of a heel as I'm already 5'8" and find them uncomfortable in any case.

If you are mid-30s, what do you wear on your feet?

I'm a converse/ballet pump/biker boot/DMs mid-late 30s gal... I got some lovely new gold/silver leather cons the other day. No other inspiration to share I'm afraid

Superga - sturdier than Converse but as comfy

Fairylea · 04/10/2014 16:41

Never too old for converse. And 35 isn't old anyway!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 04/10/2014 16:45

Converse and Toms.

Creatureofthenight · 04/10/2014 16:50

I'm 34 and I still wear trainers (never white ones, always black). I also wear a succession of cheap boots from New Look, or ballet pumps/Toms/ sandals in the summer.

HermioneWeasley · 04/10/2014 16:57

Trainers. Currently loving the not very attractive but oh so comfy sketchers go walks

Wigeon · 04/10/2014 19:36

Ah, very helpful, thank you. Thought Converse were for in your 20s, no idea why really! Never heard of Toms so will investigate, thanks.

I'm 36 and I have TBS and Softino trainers, and Josef Seibel winter boots. Can't wear ballet pumps as not enough support but really wish I could.

Belindabelle · 04/10/2014 21:53

I am 45 and wear Superga. I have them in silver, bronze, red canvas and grey suede which have a furry lining. Love them!

My mum wears converse, she's 69!

lovemyboo · 04/10/2014 23:13

I love those boots, seem quite fashionable. There was a post on Clarks brogues the other day, they are great for this in betweeny weather.

StripyBanana · 04/10/2014 23:17

Are those boots for jeans or would younwear with dresses. I find this question hard too!

BackforGood · 04/10/2014 23:18

Trainers - I'm a lot older than you.

lovemyboo · 04/10/2014 23:31

Stripy- both! Dresses and skirts with thick tights and with jeans! How fab is that!

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 05/10/2014 08:11

Well, I'm 36 and wear New Balance trainers! I'm very heavy on Toms and they only last me a few months.

In the winter I'll wear these

Wigeon · 05/10/2014 18:08

Ok, this is all really helpful, thank you.

Toms look like they are mostly canvas, and therefore not very waterproof - is that right, oh Toms-wearers?

OP posts:
ThinkIveBeenHacked · 05/10/2014 18:11

No, not waterproof. Same material as converse I think, no idea what the sole is made out of. They dont soak up the rain though, most of it beads off.

NotYouNaanBread · 05/10/2014 18:38

Converse or slipper style loafers - much more chic than ballet flats now anyway, and ( for me) more comfy.

Or biker boots now that it's getting cooler - Ash.

SinglePringle · 05/10/2014 18:38

45 year old here. If not in heels (am also 5'8 but regularly wear 4 inch heels), then:

Converse
Supergra
Ankle boots with a Cuban heel
Biker boots
Brogues
Loafers.

I agree with the posts above, Converse or similar canvas shoes are the best option between flats and boots. I am 30 and only bought my first pair this year and I LOVE them. I have to wear mine with custom orthotics as I have flat wide feet, and that's the only way to make sure I don't get blisters after a long walk.

My mother has similar problems with her feet, she usually wear Clarks, Ecco or Gabor, something like this (see photo attached).

In summer I wore Ralph Lauren sandals, can't find a picture but the sole was similar to this shoeslisthq.com/imges/a2.zassets.com/images/z/2/6/2/4/0/9/2624098-p-MULTIVIEW.jpg

Super comfy, I wore them with pretty much everything including dresses. (shame they started falling apart after a few months). I find that "flat" shoes with a bit of a heel (2 cm) are more comfortable that totally flat.

Russel Bromley has a big selection of dress flats, they are not really flats as they have wide 2 cm heel. Quite expensive but may be worth it if normal flats are just too flat.

What casual shoes for 35 year old?

Thank you all! Converse definitely seem to have the most votes...
