Are skinnies possible on an hourglass?

Now it's getting cooler I'm wondering how best to wear skinnies. I'm 5'6" and size 12 at the hips, size 10 waist, size 12, sometimes 14 bust. Legs are slim up to top of thigh - definite carrot top there. Dress style is casual or smart casual. Last winter I got by with longer tops, such as Crew pleated top shirts that fit on the bust, define the waist & flare over hips to end mid thigh, or shaped woollens, again ending mid thigh. I can't wear really high heels daytime as live in a rural location, so tended to wear flat or slight heeled boots. Has anyone got any different ideas as to what I could wear with my skinny jeans & trousers this autumn? It was so much easier with bootcut, which balanced out bigger thighs & top half.

I'm sure someone competent will come along shortly - but why do you have to wear skinnies?
What about dresses, or boyfriend jeans and shirts?
what about choosing boots with a slight, chunky heel to lengthen the silhouette?

Sorry if i'm not very helpful.

I'm similar to you - 5" 5 and size 10/12 hourglass. I do wear skinny jeans (high waisted ones) but acknowledge that skirts are really more my friend!

The problem I have with skinnies is that they accentuate my slim legs (great) and therefore also draw massive attention to my wide hips Grin

I wear mine with knee high boots which helps to balance things out a bit (mine are heels which obviously is not so practical for you but maybe a flat style would work?) And I make sure I have a very fitted top on so I don't look like a big potato on skinny legs!

I've just bought these. They're straight cut as opposed to skinnies but tbh on my curvy frame they are as snug fitting as skinnies! The denim is lovely and rigid and holds everything in without making you look like a sausage stuffed into too small a skin.

kaykayblue · 26/09/2014 10:06

Go for straight cut rather than skinnies. There's no point in buying jeans in a cut that you have to style your shape around. It's just not worth it!

Lilacflower · 26/09/2014 10:11

I think you could. I'm 5 8 and a size 12 hourglass. I only wear skinniest/jeggings in winter tucked into boots, today am wearing ankle length biker boots or go for straight leg with trainers as it balances out more.

OneLittleLady · 26/09/2014 10:27

I'm an hourglass, bigger than you and I wear skinnies all the time. There's no hiding that I've got big hips so I say screw it and I wear whatever I want. My sister would happily criticize my outfit if she thought it was truly terrible and didn't suit me at all and she's never passed comment on me wearing skinnies so i think i'm in the clear Grin

Branleuse · 26/09/2014 10:30

no, not really a good look on hourglass or pear shapes.

Obviously what looks good or not is subjective, but I think skinny jeans are a style best avoided if youre curvy.

Bigoleheffer · 26/09/2014 10:31

Absolutely. I admire an hour glass and yearn for a bigger butt and smaller waist.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 26/09/2014 10:34

FGS size 12 hips aren't big!

It will look fine.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 26/09/2014 10:36

I'm a size 16 pear and I like skinny trousers, I'd much rather be a carrot than a cube.

I just look a frumpy lump in straight legged trousers and a sack of potatoes in wide legs.

Lonelynessie · 26/09/2014 12:54

Hourglass size 12 here and I practically live in my skinnies. I look a frumpy mess in straights/bootcut.

Superherosidekick · 26/09/2014 18:51

Yes I am an hourglass size 10/12 and your height and I live in skinnies or very slim straight leg jeans usually with converse or Ash trainers. I wear with vest tops and long cardigans this time of year or a semi fitted lightweight knit.

cheapskatemum · 26/09/2014 20:53

Dragonfliesdrawflame (lovely moniker) I will find the link for Crew shirts, they are very flattering, but there's only usually 1 or 2 a year. I'm a big fan of Phase Eight dresses, so will look out for their tallie tops and start frequenting Hobbs.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll invest in flat, knee high boots as agree they'll balance out my lower leg. Lol at elephants "I'd much rather be a carrot than a cube". Boyfriend jeans just make me look, or at least feel, a sloppy mess. Maybe I haven't found the right brand. The problem with skirts is they don't really suit my lifestyle: dog walking, running around after 4 DSs (oops wrong order of priority!). However, I think the long boots would help, they'd also hide my skinny ankles.

I'll try the vest top and longer cardigan idea too - have those already, so no expenditure required.

Hopefully that's a link to the pleated shirts. This years don't look as long as some previous ones. Watch out they don't end at your widest part, although with very dark coloured trousers you should be all right.
