I am 5'9", size 12/14 bottom and 14/16 top. I am very, very short waisted. What i want to wear are my nice shirts and blouses loosely tucked into a waistline but i know this makes me look like a barrage balloon. When i leave the shirts untucked they billow out from my heaving chest and increase my size. is there anything i can do to avoid binning them.

Don't know but the website Dressipi is good for this stuff. You type in your body type, height, weight, measurements and it creates a profile for you and suggests stuff to wear. It is free.

Watching with interest! And will check out Dressipi later, thanks.

If you're short waisted you don't want anything that ends on the waist or emphasises it. So separates aren't ideal, unless they're a similar colour and fitted through the waist (ie not blousy). Long tailored jackets would be good if that suits your style (first button needs to be in the right place so it doesn't gape, single breasted). Dresses would be probably good too, eg wiggle dress shape if you like that? A lot of online places do retro dress styles that suit a big bust eg lady v London.

And this Pinterest has lots of useful guides for body shape/style.

For the shirts, you could get them altered so they fit well through your waist? Or wear under a jacket...?

You want fitted shaped shirts that are cut to go in at the waist and finish below the hip bone. This will elongate the top half to balance it with the bottom half. No tucking in though.

how big are your boobs? do you buy a 14/16 because of them rather than because of your back or tummy?

have a look here

Thanks for the replies. Yes, Gymboy - I am all boob. Quite a narrow back -if you ignore the little fat backs under my bra strap but i do have broad shoulders. I really am quite an odd shape :). Oh, and while i'm oversharing, i have a real old mummy tummy too. Help!!

Exercises for core could help with the tummy? eg or Pilates?

In the meantime, it really sounds like tailoring will be your friend. Uniqlo do basic jackets that have a small amount of stretch in them which could be good to get a nice fit on the waist and bust?

And have you been intervened by the experts on the bra thread? Getting the right sized bra is massively important if you have a short waist, you want to avoid sag!
