Should one cover ones crotch when wearing skinny jeans??

I'm really embracing skinny jeans lately and find a slouchy jumper/top with them looks great, however I recently wore a chunky jumper with them that didn't cover my crotch and felt I may have the proportions wrong. With leggings I would always cover this area, but not with straight or boot cut jeans... Please advise!

I opened this thread worrying it'd be about some new type of skinny jeans with the crotch cut away for some reason Shock Relieved to find not!

I wear skinny jeans like any other trousers, but would wear longer tops or dresses with leggings, but I subscribe to the 'leggings aren't trousers' rule.

Fairylea · 20/09/2014 09:03

Personally unless someone is about 15 and a size 8 then I think longer tops are always more flattering.... I tend to treat them like leggings.

Haha!!
Now there's a thought!
I hope they don't ban the thread thinking it's dodgy!!
No seriously, I feel safer in skinny jeans not showing my crotch but I guess it's because I may look out of proportion otherwise as I don't have skinny legs... I wear my skinnies to create an illusion.

No you don't have to cover your crotch! (unless they are really thin and jegging-like & there is the possibility of camel-toe?!?)

I always wear longer tops with leggings as it's way more flattering but skinny jeans look fine with shorter jumpers etc IMO.

SwiftRelease · 20/09/2014 09:27

Someone once joked about the "camel toe" effect. Fortunately not about me! Bern more careful to cover up ever since!

Coughle · 20/09/2014 09:28

I was picturing a codpiece...

Me I don't cover my crotch but I guess it depends on the look you're going for... I think you'd be fine either way as long as you're not rocking a camel.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 20/09/2014 09:33

I wear skinny jeans like jeans. I don't find skinny jeans tight round the crotch though.

But I wear Jeggings like leggings.

TheBuskersDog · 20/09/2014 09:37

Are you really talking about covering your hips/bum because of your size/shape, rather than crotch which implies it's somehow indecent not to. If your jeans covered crotch is inappropriate viewing then your jeans must be very thin or tight, or both.

AlleyCat11 · 20/09/2014 09:37

Skinny jeans bypassed me completely. Still have my flares (which are back in). But I'm thinking of getting some, to tuck into winter boots. They tend to be stretch denim, so don't give your bum the same scaffolding as 100% cotton denim. I'd wear a long jumper so as to cover my ample junk, rather than camel toe. Though I wouldn't want that either...

Petal02 · 20/09/2014 09:43

I always wear a long top with skinny jeans, to avoid the parsnip look.

Twinklestein · 20/09/2014 09:50

I agree with pps - proper jeans are fine with shorter tops, but the jeggingy leggingy type look better with a longer top I think.

peasandlove · 20/09/2014 09:54

I wear skinny's with a chunky belt and a tshirt loosely tucked in at the front. It depends on your body shape I guess. You shouldnt get camel toe in jeans unless they're really thin (I got some thin white skinny jeans from new look once that I suspect would show everything, I've not worn them)

CointreauVersial · 20/09/2014 12:16

I wear them both ways - sometimes with a longer/oversized top, but more often with a regular top. I love a "half-tuck", just hitching the side/front of your top into the waistband, but leaving the rest loose. There is definitely crotch-visibility with that look.

BUT, as others have said, this assumes your skinnies are decently thick and fit well. Otherwise, treat them as leggings, and keep your crotch/arse well hidden, unless you are 13 years old and super-slim .

50ShadesOfSummer · 20/09/2014 12:42

Err, no. Treat them like any other jeans or trousers. In fact, I think the high waisted styles look better with a short top or tucked-in shirt.

msfreud · 20/09/2014 12:47

I've never thought about this until now - my skinny jeans are not skin tight anyway, and I don't see them as any different from other types of jeans/trousers in that respect.

Leggings and pull-on jeggings are not trousers, though, and tops should be long with those!

Trills · 20/09/2014 13:00

If the top half of them is the same shape and thickness as "normal" jeans then the same rules apply, surely? The "Skinny" part is lower down.
