My Birkenstocks birkenstink

I mean, they really honk. After living in them through this very hot and sweaty summer, I now feel like they should be publicly shamed and then banished to a small, smellproof cell. Any idea how I can get the smell out, or should I just nuke them from orbit and start again?

I washed mine, on a short and cold cycle in the machine and they came out fresh smelling (tiny squirt of washing liquid), but they seemed to get smelly quicker after washing. I think as some of the varnish/finish washes off. I now sprinkle them with bicarb of soda and leave overnight at least if not a couple of days and then hoover it all up. that seems to work.

Unfortunately with Birkenstocks I think once they start to smell that's it, there is no permanent solution.

I use diluted zoflora on a damp cloth to wipe them. Then put them on the garden bench in the sun to air.

I wash mine in the washing machine - no particular normal cycle, and they come up a treat. Last pair managed to last 2-3 years this way (pretty much constant wear from May-September).
