Dirty dancing fancy dress

I am going to a dirty dancing singalong thing next month and you have to get dressed up.
I was thinking of wearing one of the dresses as I really can't pull off hot pants and a swimsuit!
But I've no idea what style they are or what to search for online. It's 50's right so maybe something like this?

So where would I get one of these that won't cost me much and what shoes etc would I wear - pumps?
Or what would you suggest as another suitable outfit?

How about knee length jeans shorts and a white shirt?

If you search for either 'fit and flare' or 'skater' type dresses you should get some the right style.

I have some cropped jeans which I could cut and a nice white shirt.
But I think everyone else is going rather more dressy and I don't get out much so I thought I would make an effort!

go as the sister in her hula girl outfit or twinset get up, wear black jeans and vest and go as Johnny, wear a suit and go as the son of the owner? or yes to the shorts and white tied up shirt. Always a good excuse to watch the film again for inspiration.
