What to wear for John a Lewis interview - advice

It's been quite a few years since I took part in a job interview!

Any advice on what to wear (sales assistant job) should I be uber smart - smart jacket and trousers?

I was kind of thinking of a black shift type dress with a nice cardi in a black/neutral colour....

Also everyone seems to say black. Is colour really a no no?

I am mid 40's and a little clueless with smarter clothes. But would like to make the right impression. Thanks

Formal dress is fine, but I'd say no to a cardigan, as it's too informal. If you need something to cover your arms then wear a jacket. I have worn dresses not suits to lots of interviews and done well, so don't feel you have to wear a suit, but you do need to be smart. Make sure it's knee length and wear tights! I'd stick to dark colours to be on the safe side - blue, grey or black

Cashmerecardigans - thanks for that. My dress has 3/4 sleeves and just below the knee. In your opinion could I get away with wearing the dress without a jacket?

Yes, I wore exactly that, withut a jacket, to a management job interview at a uni last week and got the job :).
Good luck!

I got a sales assistant job at JL as a student. The thing they really really wanted was to employ someone who would be nice to their customers. Having said that your outfit sounds great
