What kind of trousers to people wear for workwear these days??

I'm starting a teaching placement tomorrow (yeay!) so been going through my wardrobe and have a few suitable things.

However, I've been a SAHM since 2008 and my old office wardrobe consists of boot cut trousers that I remember wearing with what people on here might term 'mum boots'.

I have 12 pairs of 'trousers' but in actual fact they are all jeans. What kind of thing do people wear for work trousers these days? Sorry to sound so clueless! I can't face the bootcut ones in my wardrobe after years of skinny jeans!

(will be wearing dresses for the rest of this week!)

Bunny - I work in a smart-ish office, and we wear:

Slim leg trousers (definitely not boot-cut, sorry .....!)
Capri/bistro trousers and ankle grazers while the weather is still mild

The above all work well with:

Ballet pumps
Pointy flats
Kitten heels
..... and we'll all be in ankle boots as it gets colder

If you're tempted to wear dresses/skirts or a tunic, you could wear leggings/opaque tights with ankle boots.

Hope this helps :)

PS: what are "mum boots"? Sounds terrifying .......

Good question OP. Can I add a supplementary request for posters to recommend boots to wear with slim leg trousers? I'm like you and in desperate need for new trews but constantly have cold feet and don't want to be in ballet flats for the winter. I'm conscious that, unsupervised, I'll be in the "mum boots!".

(hope you don't mind me crashing the thread a bit)

that's no worries thejoysofboys -I was wondering about the boots myself!

I'm ok with dresses and boots as wear them anyway (though really dislike ankle boots with tights and dresses - sorry!)

I think I need to go and try some trousers on - any recommendations for decent shops?

Gap, Mango, Cos, Boden and Banana Republic - all do slim cropped trousers in stretch cotton.

For wool, there is J Crew and Boden but not many other brands (most are straight or wide legged when it comes to wool).
