Washing wool coats - Belinda?

I read something on the Workwear Edit about putting white wool coats in the washing machine. I have a grubby pale grey knee-length wool coat - has anyone risked washing their coat and how did it go? What setting did you use? Do you have to iron it afterwards? Any hints or tips?

Thanks!

Hi! I machine wash my wool coats fairly often. I put one coat in the machine at a time, with Woolite, on a cold, gentle / delicates wash w 600RPM spin setting. Then I hang the coat to dry on a proper wooden suit coat hanger. I don't iron it, but I would hang it near a hot shower to steam any remaining creases out.

Note:

I only wash wool coats, no idea re alpaca, mohair, cashmere etc.

Coats take a day or so to dry, and I hang mine inside, near the dehudifier.

I also warm machine wash the DDs down puffers, and tumble dry them w dryer balls (NOT tennis balls - they stink).

Thank you! That's v helpful. I shall look in Tesco for Woolite and give it a go. Have just checked label and it says 80% wool, 20% polyester. Confused I think I'll risk it.

I have washed that composition in the machine. Just not mohair or alpaca, or other potentially tricky fabrics or finishes.

To be honest, a baby was sick all over my cream coat. After I finished laughing w shock (the dad was almost crying w laughter, the mother was mortified) I took it to the dry cleaner. It didn't come out. So I threw it in the washing machine. It all came out. Made me wonder why I bothered w dry cleaning wool coats.

Grin At least now I know I can wash it - now to lose the baby weight so I can fasten it!
