Will my hair go orange or fall out?

I dyed my hair about 2 weeks ago - bright red - and hate it. I have bought colour dye remover and a brown colour for after. I can not be arsed to strand test both. Lady suggested I do as my hair might go orange and there is no way of knowing what brown on red will make hence the using the colour remover stuff first.

I hate the red. Everyone says it looks good. I am ugly and over weight with bright red flipping hair with brown bits where I missed them Hmm.

I often colour my hair on a whim and when I am stressed (scale of stress - off the scale) so need to try and be sensible Hmm.

Test -- or it will go orange!

I doubt you are ugly.

Hope you feel less stressed soon.

Itsfab · 07/09/2014 20:20

Bummer Sad.

I am tempted to cut it really short too Hmm.

I used the colour remover stuff and it went gingery/orange. I used a semi perm colour over the top about a week later and it looked fine.
I think the box said you can colour it straight away but I left it a week just to let it settle down.

Word of warning, the colour remover stuff stinks.

Redcoats · 07/09/2014 20:23

I didn't strand test but them I never do because I'm a bit lazy.

Oh and I'm sure your not ugly. If people are telling you it looks nice then it probably does.

TheKitchenWitch · 07/09/2014 20:23

I had exactly the same problem.
Removed colour. Hair was bright orange. Immediately dyed it brown.
No problems at all, except that I was in the bathroom for ages doing all the rinsing etc and yes, it stinks!

Itsfab · 07/09/2014 21:00

I have used the remover before and had 5 horizontal stripes of different colours Grin. Wish I had never done the blinking red. I wanted to go blonde ffs.

too late to do it now. Will have to have a think as if it goes wrong..

I feel I can't change it with everyone saying it is nice but I don't like it Sad.

If you do use ColourB4 you may find that any dye you put on next goes much darker than you expected - that happened to me. So if you want, say, mid-brown, pick a light brown or even dark blonde.

Itsfab · 13/09/2014 15:53

I still hate it though someone else has said today they like it. Currently got some chopped off hair in a dish with the potential new colour on it and doing the 20 minute wait now.

Itsfab · 13/09/2014 16:24

Was actually 30 minutes and no real change so will have to cut more hair and make up the colourB4 remover. On the box says fine for red and not fine for red Confused.

can you afford to go to a salon? You would be better off asking someone professional to sort this out.

Itsfab · 13/09/2014 16:38

I have been trying to book on line but no one is there. I can't expect to ring now and get an appointment for tonight I don't think. I am now waiting for the colour remover to work on a cut out bit of hair and then if it does will try the new colour on it. If it doesn't work I won't do anything and will have to find a salon to do it. I could cry. Last time I listen to my husband. Plus I am skint this month so really need it to work at home. everyone loves it except me.

It probably won't fall out, or go orange tbh, but it really won't do your hair or scalp any favours. If you out a really dark brown over top of the red it MIGHT cancel out the redness? (I've done this before many times and gone from a bright red back to a mid brown in one feel swoop)

You mentioned unthread that you were thinking of cutting it all off? Again I have thought and done the same many times and most of the time regretted it! It just takes so long to grow again :( maybe look at a pic of when you had short hair etc? Or what I do is get a mega amount of Kirby grips and gripping it all into the style I would have (rather than looking at gorgeous elfin models in magazines) and seeing how it would work with my face shape etc.

And regarding the 'ugly' comment, you may feel that because your confidence is low that you feel that way, but doing something drastic (like dying your hair red Wink could just affect your self confidence more!)

cerealqueen · 13/09/2014 19:26

What is your natural colour? I did exactly this - my hair is dark blonde, dyed it red and I looked like Janet Street Porter - it was almost pink. It was winter so I wore hats while I worked out what to do.

I bought the colour b4 stuff and it worked though I think there was a lot of lift in the red dye as it went quite blonde. Too blonde for me but i wore a hat. You must wait a few weeks before you re-dye BUT you can add semi permanent colour immediately so have one to hand. When you do re-dye, DON'T go dark, the hair is porous and really grabs the colour. Even dark blonde was too dark for me!

Being a bit stupid, I did something similar in the summer (yep, very stupid). I couldn't afford the colour b4 stuff so I just lived with it and it faded very quickly, shocked how quick really. Thinking about t, I do see threads on here where people have paid a fortune for red hair and it goes down the plughole in a week or so. Once the pink red tones had gone, it looked rather nice.

So, either option works, just depends how patient you are!

spottymoo · 13/09/2014 19:39

I did the colour before and needed to do it twice and it didn't remove all the colour. This is quite normal apparently I was left with a brassy colour I then added a dark blonde and was left with a medium brown.

I was a dark brown almost black natural colour light brown.

If it's a schquoff (the very bright red colours) then it doesn't remove them I was told

Itsfab · 13/09/2014 19:42

I'm done

Had the remover on a test strand for an hour. Rinsed for 2.5 minutes and it looked brown. Fine with that.

Then put the potential new colour on for half an hour.

Put colour remover on my head for the hour.

Rinsed colour remover off, took ages. My hair is not brown. There is a lesson there. Rinsing was supposed to be 10 minutes but with no colour coming out I decided not to waste the water. I did everything correctly when I was doing it for real on my head. I had misunderstood the point of the rinsing.

DH said my hair is ginger via a photo as he is out.

DS1 says it is strawberry blonde. Get him Grin. All of 13.

I think it is a mixture of the two. I have blow dried and won't do anything now until fully dried. Confirmed to me I want to be lighter so will probably bin the mahogany brown I have made up. Confused.

Oh I missed I had replies Smile

Will read them now.

The red I did was L'Oreal 3.66 dark red

I was blonde as small child then went mousy brown but tbh it has been so long so I have seen my natural colour I have no clue what to expect. I don't know how to do a pic or I would. I am liking the lighter colour but dh saying it is ginger worries me a bit as I don't think it is

OP posts:
Itsfab · 13/09/2014 19:50

Is what I am left with my natural colour or is it like it has taken several layers of dye of and this is what is left but if I did another remover it would be different again and not necessarily my natural colour.

OP posts:
spottymoo · 13/09/2014 20:44

Mind had a ginger tint even when u died it, it had the tint for for a few days but that faded x

Itsfab · 13/09/2014 21:23

DH and DD are home. DH said it is all different colours and clearly does not want it to stay like this. DD thinks I have dyed my hair orange Hmm.

samesizetoes · 13/09/2014 22:00

some info about colour b4 hope this helps

Itsfab · 13/09/2014 22:09

Thanks samesizetoes

I think I am glad I used it before seeing those. I think it would have scared me off.

I will see what it is like in natural light but will have to wash again either way as I can still smell the horrible aroma of the remover.
