should 40 year old women wear combat trousers?

Now don't all come on here raging. I am approaching that magical age and own a pair.

However, when I was up at the school today I was amazed at how many mums dress exactly the same as, eg a 17 year old. And it's kind of OK, is it?

One woman, deffo 40s, had really spiky hair, camoflagued (sp) combats and a tie dyed vest top.

When our mothers were our age, they didn't dress like teens did they? Mine wore rain macs! Mind you, she made me wear them, even in primary school, so it was kind of reversed in those days - kids dressed as their mums.....

I intend to grow old disgracefully. My mum always says that old ladies tend to adopt the fashion that was around in their hey day hence lots of twinsets and hair in a 'set'. She reckons that our generation of old ladies will be in combats, trainers etc - bring it on I say.

grans in combats. hooray!

Well you'll get a resounding "YES!" from me. I'm 44 and still wear boardies and flip flops!!

Hopefully, by the time we are all OAPs, we won't have to wear beige.

Oh holy moly, I am only 4 years off and I wear them (it'a my 'uniform' for my preschool job!)
It's a hard one, I don't slavishly follow fashions but sometimes you just find something practical, wearable, comfy and makes you feel good - like combats! And all shops these days (regardless of their 'target' age groups seem to stock similar lines don't they, albeit watered down versions - go check out Top Shop followed by BHS .
so short of limiting ourselves to button-up cardies with gold buttons and sunray pleated skirts as 40-year-olds would have done 20 years ago, what, pray, are we to do?
There's always going to be some women who overdo the Clare's Accessories bit, but frankly, I say we can wear what we like, so long it doesn't make babies cry or teenagers snigger.

My Mum's 66 and wears them, albeit a black fairly low key pair from M&S but they are still combats.

Well I was wearing them yestday but I am 39

Obviously when I turn 40 I shall have a huge bonfire burning anything young looking and go to Littlewoods and buy some slacks and some polyester shirts

Oh dear me so I better throw out my George combats with practical pockets asap and get out the twinset and pearls ( nylon and polyester mix) and get my hair permed into nice grey curls ...

trinityrhino · 23/09/2006 14:59
