short hair cut that doesn't make me look like a man

I have a chin length bob and am so sick of it. I end up tying my hair back most of the time which I suit, so does that mean I'll suit a shorter style? I don't want to look like a bloke which a couple of people said to me when I last had it really short about 20 years ago. Hmm

I'm wondering about quite short at the back but still long enough on top for a fringe that I can tuck around my ears? I have quite high cheekbones but I'm not pretty, does this really matter? And no I'm not going to post a photo!

It's hard to judge really without a photo but you may want to consider the following-

Do you have a big nose/forehead/chin?
How is your skin?
Do your ears stick out?
Do you have a long or short stumpy neck?
Double chin?
What texture is your hair?
Do you wear make-up?
What is your clothing style?
Face shape?

I can give you a more informed opinion if you can give me any pointers as to the above.

Sarah Harding (of girls aloud fame) is the queen of the short at the back long at the front do IMO, you could google her for inspiration.
I've got shorter hair than hers though and I have to say it's not necessarily 'easy' to care for - I find I need to at least wet, blow dry and style it everyday as it's all over the place when I wake up. The advantage of course is that it's much quicker to dry than longer styles.

I had the bob -and like yourself only tied it back, so a bit meh

I went for a crop and I'm really pleased.
I do make sure it has a bit of length and layering then I can spike it up a bit with gel or mousse or serum to smooth it.

It's easier to dye (and better condition because I'm not overlapping the dye too much, it gets cut out)
I wear earring 24/7 and make sure I wear some make-up. Not alot for work though, I do my eyebrows with an eyebrow filler.
Hair care - I wash alternate days but it gets soaked in the shower daily. It's actually more work than before but now I'm hot-flushing, I don;t think the longer hair would have stayed anyway.

DD has noted that I look like Sue Perkins though (glasses and short hair though hers is darker)
Not sure if that's a compliment (though she is alot of MNetters girl crushes) Wink

Thanks for your replies Smile

i have a high forehead so want to keep a fringe. My nose isn't massive but not exactly petite either!

No double chins (yet) and my skin is okay. I wear nmakeup when I'm at work and I thought I'd probably wear more eye makeup if I got short hair?

i have a long face, I suit my hair up high on my head so that's why I didn't want it too short on top, it needs a bit of oomph.

I have quite fine hair but lot of it. I was going to get highlights as well to make it a bit more interesting. I think when i have my hair down it dort of drags my face down as well. When i put my hair up it seems to lift my face and put it more in proportion. And i don't have sticky out ears Grin

You could get it cut but get some longer layers cut in, then see how you feel with it, go shorter if you wanted?

There's loads more movement in shorter hair, and you can disguise the bits you don't like (like a fringe for your forehead)
I had a one length bob, then a very wispy fringe. Now it's short I can do R/L/Centre parting or none at all.

anne Hathaway has some good short hair cuts

Thanks. I like that pixie cut, but maybe a bit longer on top. Not sure I'm brave enough for that short! Maybe I should get it cut shorter in stages, then it won't be do much of a shock.

Is this Pinterest board any use to you?

I had mine cut into a short pixie a few months ago. I was terrified at first (in fact, I had a thread on here wailing about it) but loved it after a few days. I do need more makeup with it though, and earrings too.

MellieFitz · 03/09/2014 21:49

Oh yes Remus that's fab thanks Grin
