Petite autumn winter capsule wardrobe challenge??

silversixpence · 03/09/2014 09:22

Can anyone help? I have a bit of money to spend on clothes and would like some stylish versatile pieces that will last. I am size 8-10 and 5'2" and struggling to find nice clothes that fit my frame. Budget is up to £400 total.

I would like:
A beautifully cut wool coat
Long (below hip length) merino or cashmere cardigan
Ankle boots
Courts
Slim ankle length trousers

Colour wise I like grey/navy/black with brights eg raspberry, emerald, yellow, teal, turquoise

I'm similar sized to you. Wallis petite trousers are a very good fit. I'm also wearing my m&s denim jeggings ( hateful word but do look nice) a lot. I love Fly London boots as they have a brilliant wedge which has a very small 'slope' which is fantastically comfortable (available on Amazon but beware sizing can be odd, free delivery and returns). I bought a lovely winter coat in Précis several years ago. I loved it but it got a bit dated as it was very long. Last year I had it shortened and it looks fab again.

Cardigan, surly almost anywhere? I did, a few years back get three cashmere long, flowy cardigans from Primark which I still have. Only stocked in the bigger branches.

I love your colour palate btw. I'm not a great fan but Boden does do nice colours.

CardiCorgi · 04/09/2014 12:56

Have you tried Banana republic for the trousers? I found that their ankle length Sloane trousers fitted quite nicely. The petite were a tick too short, but I'm an inch taller than you so depending on your proportions, you may have better luck. I ended up with the regular length as I decided that a tiny bit too long was preferable.
The colours you want sound nice.

Uniqlo

Karbea · 04/09/2014 13:49

Ohh I'd love us to have a petite thread! I'm 5ft. I've no money to spend on any clothes ATM, but would love to see what you buy!

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 04/09/2014 13:54

I am a 10-12 and 5 foot 1, so not dissimilar to you. Have you looked at Gap petite? Only available online, but you can return to Gap stores. Other petite ranges that I like are Boden and some things at Banana Republic and J Crew. M and S petite has the odd good thing online, but most of it isn't to my taste.

Precis and Minuet would have wool coats in petite sizes. Its a while since I have looked at their ranges though.

I buy nearly everything petite in Boden now, as I find that there is so little choice elsewhere.

silversixpence · 05/09/2014 23:41

I will have a look at banana republic and Boden. Not feeling very inspired by any of their winter coats! I have just been sent the Me+Em catalogue through the post and everything is lovely but for women 6" taller than me Hmm

I'm a size 6-8 and 5ft so feel your pain. I shop mainly from petite ranges to get a good cut and fit.
M&S petite - great for skinny jeans which they call jeggings but they have button and fly fastening. They also have some nice high wool content coats.
Gap petite online - fab at the moment - lots of trousers and jeans, great fit dresses and shirts. I got a petite fit merino jumper so have a look for cardigans.

Topshop petite - good for trousers and jeans.
Boden petite - good quality coats. Their bistro crop trousers are worth a look too.
I'm a size 4 in shoes so not particularly small feet. Clarks often start at a small size and have some nice ankle boots.
Happy shopping!

had some time last night and managed to look up some things. I have ordered the Petite slim brady jeans in an optimistic size 8 (10 is sold out). If they're no good I may try the Boden boyfriend jeans but they seem a bit too short and the regular length is sold out. Also these black trousers in a short length for work.

I am considering blowing my budget on this pink Toast coat because I love the colour and style but think I will just end up disappointed as their clothes are not cut for small people! Anyone think I can get away with it as an oversized coat?

Might get this Hush cocoon cardigan.

Shoes-wise I have bought these silver T bar flats and would like to finally get some Ash virgin trainers. Not found any courts yet and I have wide feet so will have to go to the shops to try some on.

I love those shoes, will order, I have the ash trainers already and love them.
I am your size/height too so will be following this.

TwoInTheMourning · 10/09/2014 18:00

Same size and height here. Massimo Dutti usually works very well for me.

prettywhiteguitar · 10/09/2014 19:17

Hey I'm the same size as you and have a dress from toast, size 8. It's fits in proportion to the style so I wouldn't dismiss the coat. Grin bad influence

prettywhiteguitar · 10/09/2014 19:18

Love love those trainers

silversixpence · 10/09/2014 19:48

prettywhiteguitar you might persuade me to order it to try on Smile

my Pinterest board if anyone wants to have a look.

Another shorty here, five one. I can wear a lot of toast, but only because I'm a size 12 and booby, otherwise they would absolutely swamp me. Toast is cut generously already, so if you're small framed it looks like you're dressing up in your mum's clothes. By no means give up though, try stuff on and some things may still work.

NothingTraLaLa · 10/09/2014 21:49

Hi, I'm almost 5 foot and size 10/12. I bought one of these coats from Lands End last year and love its retro style - also that it comes in more than just black.

Looking forward to checking out some of the suggestions on this thread!

NothingTraLaLa · 10/09/2014 21:51

Oh ffs, link fail. It is the Luxe Wool Swing Car Coat in petite.

silversixpence · 11/09/2014 21:12

Nothing that looks like a lovely coat. I have just bought a size 00 coat from Emerson Fry (see my raspberry coat thread) and have everything crossed that I can at least get it on even if I can't button it Grin. I am apparently a size 0/2 according to their body measurements even though I am usually a 8 or 10 here so think there is some vanity sizing at play.

silversixpence · 19/09/2014 19:45

So to update the thread, i got the warehouse T bars which are gorgeous and very comfortable and look much more expensive than they are. I thought I might get the black ones but they are sold out online in my size so must be popular.

My Ash Virgins are here and I love them, they are beautiful and comfy. Honestly I haven't had this much shoe buying success in months! Smile

Asos jeans looked terrible on me so they are going back. I will stick to my current pair until I get time to go to the shops as think I need to try them on. Still tempted to try the Baukjen ones.

The emerson fry coat is here and is fabulous.

So now I just need some cigarette trousers and possibly black boots and think that will be it for this year.

OP posts:
Sonotkylie · 20/09/2014 08:09

I have the Asos Brady jeans but had to hack a bit off the bottom to make them look good. I thought they were too long and too wide. BUT I also have the Topshop Lucas slim boyfriends which are shorter and narrower and work much better. I am taller than you (a bit) so it may not be the answer but possibly worth a go? Cheaper than the Baujken! Oh I normally buy 30 length jeans and did with the Topshop ones and they are verging on calf rather than ankle length.

Alwaysrushingaround · 20/09/2014 12:09

Also a size 8-10 and 5"2..
Where is good for work tops?
I find vero moda v gud for jeans if that helps anyone out..
