40th birthday party outfit HELP

So, once upon a time I lived in London and hung about in trendy(ish) bars. But for 10+ years I have been living in the sticks and mostly SAHMing. And now all my lovely (and wealthy, slim and glamorous) London friends are reaching 40 and I have parties to go to and no idea what to wear...

First one is in Shoreditch House later this month and I need help. Can I wear jeans (usually go out in boyfriend jeans and heels)? Or do I need to be dressier?

I am 5' 7", size 12-14 but with v solid arms and legs so would prefer not to bare either. I also look like death in black and like a drag queen in sequins or animal print. Shape wise, more tailored stuff with a defined waist suits me best, but feel a bit overdressed in that kind of thing unless a formal event (black tie, wedding etc).

Really want to feel happy and confident and not like a fat provincial loser but don't even know where to start. Help me, please!

Budget? Which shops can you get to to try stuff on?

FauxFox · 02/09/2014 20:18

Jeans and heels will be fine i'm sure - the more you overdress the more 'provincial' you will look ime...not that I care, I was the one in a chloe silk dress and silver heels at a 40th in a trendy bar in london, all the london ladies were in jeans...i take my chances to dress up where I can! Grin

Budget is not huge, maybe £200 to include shoes too.

Nearest big shopping place is Bristol which has most high street shops.

I fancy wearing jeans with some gold heels I saw in office, but need to find a top which works. Or I'd like a dress but one which is laid back cool, rather than v glam.

This in green would look great with gold heels.

tethersend I've been trying to resist that green dress for ages, you're not helping Wink

To be fair would be better on OP than me as she is taller.

That dress is gorgeous tethers.

Oh, love that dress. Style and colour are both very me.

Off to order and will buy shoes too. Even if I don't wear to this party will def use it some time.

Thank you!
