If you dye your hair at home, do you do a de-tox shampoo first?

I use a Superdrugs dye (I have very short hair so I don't worry too much about over-lapping dye and build up of dye. It'll get cropped out) but as my hair gets greyer Sad it loses the colour quicker.

In pre-prep I just wash and dry to remove any product from the last wash , but years ago I remember using an Aveda Detoxifier first .

Is it worth investing again?

I dont even wash and dry first tbh.

I only dye dirty hair too. More natural oil than product build up anyway.

No never use a detox.

If you use silicone-heavy products I would use a clarifying shampoo. If not just wash and dry at least one day before - the natural oils help the scalp. If I wash, dry and dye I get an itchy scalp.

No because my hair dresser once said that a bit of natural oil holds the dye better so not to wash my hair before going for a dye.

It was when I was a teen she told me that though. I don't know if that's still the advice.

No, just shove the dye on dry, unwashed hair as per the instructions.

I dye my hair dirty (couple of days not washed). I think the colour takes better.

Why do you wash it first?

cardigal · 31/08/2014 17:22

You would wash it if it was smothered in hair wax or serums I suppose.

my hair does have product in every day - either smoothie or spikey,

i thought having a conditioner in would reduce the dyes effectiveness tbh.

it's done now, with a load of post-dye conditioner in so i won't see the final results till tomorrow - it's a copper brown i've used since easter so no surprises Grin

I bought a detox pre-colour shampoo (for the first time) and used it before going to the salon for a few highlights. The result was more even and quicker uptake of dye. Will definitely use in future.
