I've been abroad for a week, swimming in the sea every day. I was growing out my old brown hair colour.. 5 months into going natural.. and now I have grey brow roots and awful orange..the rest.

I do NOT want to do a permanent colour again (trying to go grey) but the orange is seriously brassy and awful. Suggestions please?!

Hair dye strips your natural colour and then replaces it with dye. The process opens the hair cuticle up, making it more porous (lets the dye in) which means sun and salt water will more easily strip the colour from it, so you're left with the orange. I got the shock of my life when I did colour b4 once (similar stripping of colour effect) - it was tangerine Sad

You could go to a hairdresser and see if they can paint dye on over just the orange ends, or cut it short. Or you can put a semi permanent colour over the lot in something like your natural colour - it won't affect your natural colour too much as there isn't much dye activator in it, but should cover up the orange. That's what I did after the colour b4 and it's held quite well.

Oh, forgot to add - I did the colour b4 as a precursor to possibly going grey. I wanted to lighten it back to my natural tone, then get it to the point of semi only covering the grey (semi makes the grey blonde, not complete coverage) then maybe go completely grey from there. If I'm brave enough...

If you use on of those shampoos for silver hair (they are usually purplish in colour) it really tones down the orange.

Oh god, I ger orange after half an hour in the park.
