To all who have their hair professionally coloured ..... a question

I've been having mine done by my hairdresser for the past 5 years and it always looks great. The colour is very natural and my hair is very shiny. It actually looks like I have highlights but I just have a demi colour.

My problem is I'm moving and no hairdresser in the city I'm moving to uses Paul Mitchell colour as my present hairdresser does.

My question is - are the professional colours all much the same standard and what does your hairdresser use, and are you as happy with it as I am?! Thanks.

There are frequent threads on here about people having got their hair coloured at a hairdresser's and being really unhappy with it. As you've found one that does it perfectly for you, I would really hesitate before going elsewhere, especially somewhere that doesn't use the same type of hair dye your current salon uses on you.

Is there no way you can make a trip back to your salon as and when you need a re-dye? I think I would do that myself, rather than risk it. Disclaimer - I don't dye my hair, so my suggestion might not be do-able. Just seems a BIG risk to me!

I would also travel back. My colourist moved and I drive half an hour to see her every 10 weeks - since it takes 3 hours to do my hair it's half a day gone already so that extra hour is no hardship.

My mum travels 3 hours on the train to have her hair coloured for this exact reason. I've had the same hairdresser for 14 years

My hairdresser uses l'oreal inoa. I used to dye my hair at home and it turned into straw, now it's shiny and smooth. It's not a permanent colour so I get the highlight effect with it too. We tried a permanent one once but it made my hair very frizzy

Having moved distances where it is impossible to go back to my trusted hairdressers, I would encourage you to try somewhere in your new city even with new product. I have been getting my hair colored for 20 years and found fantastic hairdressers in new cities. I have been loyal to them for 5-10 years until moving again. It has given me optimism to try new hairdressers and keep looking until I feel I have found someone who gets great results. There are a lot of knowledgable hairdressers out there.

I've already booked for December to come back on a pre Christmas visit to see friends but it is 9 hour round trip so not really sustainable. My hair is quite weird and I've never had it cut by anyone so good so my plan on that score is only to grow it longer . I'm in denial aren't I?

I am still wondering what are the best brands though...How do you tell, not just on price surely? Any hairdressers about?

I have some friends who live in my new city but they're all blonde so can't really judge for my brunette.

If I were you I would explain your predicament to your current hairdresser and see what they recommend.

I would go for the travel back option myself but where it´s not possible look around in your new city and ask people with great hair colour where they go, also keep your eyes peeled for salons that look really busy (with nice hair coming out).
