How often do you really need to get you hair cut?

I've medium length hair and I go every 8 weeks, it never looks like it needs cutting and it's getting shorter and shorter. I'd like it longer and I'd like to save money, so just how long can I go before it looks bad?

I have short hair and push it to 8 weeks but it does start to look awful. When I had shoulder length hair I would sometimes not bother for months

GobblersKnob · 15/08/2014 11:49

I have very, very short hair, anything longer than three weeks and it looks shit, sometimes I have it done after a fortnight Grin

Mabelface · 15/08/2014 11:52

I have long, curly hair andi have a trim once or twice a year at most. Because I rarely straighten it and it only gets a rough blow dry, I have no split ends and it's in great condition.

LightastheBreeze · 15/08/2014 12:32

Shortish hair here and starts too look really shabby after 8 weeks. When it was a bit longer I could go 3 months.

I only have a cheapee trim though, under £10, where they just wet it down and trim it. I used to pay more but it never looked any better, it is quite curly though so difficult to style.

Long hair, every two years I get about 12 inches cut, then send it to the little princess trust to make wigs for cancer patients.

missmartha · 15/08/2014 13:11

Shortish hair here, just covers my ears, and it needs cutting after 8 weeks or it looks scraggy.

ilovepowerhoop · 15/08/2014 13:28

Shorter hair needs cutting more often to keep it looking tidy. When my hair was longer I could go several months between cuts as I could just put it up if needed. Now it is short I need it cut every 6 weeks or it looks messy

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/08/2014 13:37

Push it to 12 weeks OP,and see how it looks.

I have my done every 10-12 weeks as it grows out nicely.

PrimalLass · 15/08/2014 13:48

I haven't had mine done for 6 months. Going tomorrow though Grin

I have been trying to grow it, so just wear it up most days. Suddenly it is past my shoulders.

I am aiming for this so need a few layers in.

Floisme · 15/08/2014 13:52

6 weeks and it really needs doing after 4. But it's thick and wavy and grows very fast.

Jackie0 · 15/08/2014 13:57

About once a year for my long hair , I do my own fringe every couple of weeks. I do blow dry & straighten but try to remember heat protectant products.

FamiliesShareGerms · 15/08/2014 13:57

When I had long hair I had it trimmed every six months or so. My short hair needs trimming every four to fide weeks to look decent

NapoleonsNose · 15/08/2014 13:58

Chin length bob and really fine hair so I go every 8 weeks. Any longer and it just looks untidy. I'd like to go after six weeks but my hairdresser has got a bit expensive of late and I'm too tight to pay more often.

itsbetterthanabox · 15/08/2014 15:02

I go every 3 months, longer than that and it gets split. Do you want to grow it or just stay the same length?

EvenBetter · 15/08/2014 16:17

Every two years in my case! Having medium length hair cut every two months sounds bananas to me!

foxdongle · 15/08/2014 16:39

Mine is mid length and have it cut every 10 weeks, if I was growing it I would leave it longer.

r2d2ismyidealman · 15/08/2014 16:42

Don't go so soon. I have long hair and the ends don't split but start to look uneven after 10 weeks. Because I hate going to the hairdresser I usually put it off another 2 weeks!

Merinda · 15/08/2014 16:49

Short hair, and if I do not do it every 4 weeks it looks just awful

oneperfectlimousine · 15/08/2014 18:44

Short hair, and I last had it cut about six weeks ago. It's looking a bit overgrown by now.

Karbea · 15/08/2014 20:17

Thanks all! I want to grow it especially the layers which are way too short now.
I mostly wear it in a french platt as I have to have it pulled back and wear a hat at work.

I think I'm definitely going to leave it at least 12 weeks then.

I get a holiday haircut in about June and a Christmas one (for nights out) end of November....

Letthemtalk · 15/08/2014 20:21

And the plus side is everyone always notices!

Eatriskier · 15/08/2014 20:27

I have very thick hair and get mine cut whenever it gets too unmanageable. Slightly shorter style now so its more like every 2 months. However the cut before last the hairdresser absolutely butchered it, and I didn't realise how bad until a few weeks later - I was putting it down to bad styling on my part until someone else had a good rifle through. So I left my hair for as long as I could take it (nearly 4 months). I ended up needing so much damage taken out its back as short as it was taken by the butcher-hairdresser. Although at least now the hair cut is even and decent. Sadly this isn't the first time I've had the issue of leaving it longer to attempt to grow it meaning it got cut just as short.

If there's no signs of damage and your hair is manageable then don't worry, but if you're showing damage definitely go and get it trimmed. I know most hairdressers will cut well if you tell them you're trying to grow it.
