Is this dress too old for a 30-something?

Having now ordered one it doesn't exactly look too old on, but I just noticed on one site selling it review is only from 65+ customer. Don't get me wrong, I think that age group dress way better mostly than many younger people and aren't necessarily frumpy at all, and some dresses adapt to all ages. But.

I think the Bolero makes it look frumpy. Can it be detatched?

HappyGirlNow · 08/08/2014 20:58

I think it's all really frumpy, it's the cut... Sorry.

Woodenheart · 08/08/2014 21:01

What sort of function is it for? A dinner & dance?

MrsLettuce · 08/08/2014 21:02

It certainly has frump potential, yup. Frumpy on you or not depends on the fit, your height, shape and colouring. There are younger people it could be stunning on would be a nightmare on me.

Could you do a photo? neck down is fine, of course.

Thanks for the answers.

It's for evening events. The bolero does detach. But,reading what you've all said is adding to my suspicions! Also I've just noticed it is in the 'mother of the bride' section of the site Grin - I had wondered why it didn't appear under the evening dresses title but was on the all dresses one. I think I'd have to have it taken up a bit too so it wouldn't be such a bargain. The bolero is actually a nice colour, the dress not quite as much really. Put it this way, I wouldn't be paying full price for it, but it is ok.

I think I'll try in on again tomorrow for good measure. If I still think it might be ok and worth another opinion then I'll perhaps try and get a pic to put up, but otherwise will return!

I like it.

SofaCanary · 08/08/2014 22:37

It would be perfect for a SAGA cruise.

Solasum · 08/08/2014 22:38

I think it could be quite unflattering round the stomach area.

I do think its a nice dress but I agree that the bolero makes it a lil frumpy...

But I also think it could be made to look younger with the right shoes and accessories - and the right hairstyle

The model certainly isn't a mother of a bride!

temporaryusername · 08/08/2014 23:29

No, I may not be mother of a bride but I feasibly could be mother of the model! (Assuming height and skinny genes inherited from father).

I partly ordered it as I've put on weight recently while unwell, and don't know how to dress it/cover it. So I thought the bolero and loose tummy area could be bonuses, but I think I'm going for 'older' clothes in a misguided attempt to know how to dress for being bigger than I was recently. I can pick nice outfits but only when slim, whereas I guess real skill is being able to dress well at any size.

Some boleros can look nice, but that one looks like it's made of quite cheap lace, which is a large part of the problem. The whole ensemble has a very garish polyester look about it, which for the original price is a bit crap.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2014 23:37

Not nice, at any age. Sorry.

There are plenty of inoffensive maxi dresses around - Coast had some elegant looking ones in their sale iirc.

temporaryusername · 08/08/2014 23:47

Thank you for the feedback. Ouryve, I know what you mean about the material - it doesn't exactly look cheap in the flesh, but it is polyester and I agree the original price is a bit off the mark. I've noticed lots of very expensive polyester stuff around. I'll take a look at Coast sale Remus, thanks.

I've tried on that alexon stuff before and I felt it was frumpy, I am e up upper end of my 30s and dress fairly conservative but still think you can get nicer dresses.
