Where to buy nice modern pearls?

I have inherited a little sum of money from my Grandad and I would like to buy a necklace as something special to remember him by.
I would like to get some pearls as they are timeless and I like classic things. I don't want them to look like something my granny would wear though.
Has anyone got any pearls with a modern twist or any suggestions where I should look?

My DH bought me some black pearls a few years ago - a single strand. I think they look more modern than cream ones. I wear them loads (mostly in the winter though as they seem to go best with heavier clothes) and they are fab, what ever i wear them with they look great , they seem to change tone to reflect what I am wearing and and glow green, pink or gold ...( I think they were £££ though.. didnt ask) Tahitian are the best (mega £££s though) I dont know what mine are.. heres some info on getting good pearls

Real pearls a very delicate and sensitive, it's well worth reading up.

If you're anywhere near Birmingham, I got my string from a lovely shop:

I think it was two daughters (?) of an existing jewellery shop family who have branched out and are doing their own thing - I went in and picked my pearls, the clasp and the length.

Sorry - meant to say that if possible I'd go in and buy mine in a shop as opposed to ordering online as the lustre and shade really does differ.
