ok maybe I'm just really fussy but today i tried
Coast
Karen Millen
Jigsaw
Jane Norman
Hobbs
Wallis
Warehouse
Whistles
M&S
and various concessions in John Lewis
There's a top I really like in Coast but no matter how much I try to like it I don;t like the skirt that goes with it. And it's quite unusual so I don;t imagine I could team it with anything else. I'm a dress person on the whole. 5 foot 1, size 8-10, I like greens, blues, browns and sometimes reds and pinks. Don't like wrap dresses because i spend all my time trying not to flash my thigh. Spent 2 days on this so far and am not particulary amused. dh is bemused.

well, you've kiboshed most of my top suggestions but a few remain:
Monsoon
Phase Eight (or were they in JL?)
Principles (ditto)
Austin Reed is always worth a look as they have loads more in store than online
Laura Ashley
Zara?
you could always bite the bullet and go for Boden, but tbh when it comes to dresses I've done well in the most unexpected places including Gap and Dorothy Perkins.

thanks. In fact I forgot - I tried Monsoon, also Principles and Phase 8 were indeed in John Lewis, But didn;t try Zara or Laura Ashley. I also tried Kew, which I forgot to say.

LK Bennett?
Debenhams????

JackieNo · 15/09/2006 18:33

How about Debenhams ? (there's a section called occasionwear too which might be worth a look?)

JackieNo · 15/09/2006 18:34

Snap, TheBlonde.

what does anyone think of the green frilled jersey dress ? I really like it but its a wrap dress and I just know it will drive me mad. Could I gently put a few stiches in it to hold it together? I have reddish hair so green is a good colour for me.

I like it, plus it's in the sale
You'd probably just need a small safety pin to secure the top

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 15/09/2006 21:51

it's not the top that bugs me - it's the bottom - hate flashing my thighs everywhere. i've ordered it and also ordered this one . I prefer the green - it's more striking but difficult to tell how they'll fit - I hope one of them is ok - and I'll send one back. Bit concerned theyll hug my tum too much. we'll see.

the green dress looks lovely but might it be too long as you're 5 foot 1? It looks like it only comes in one length.

How much time have you got? Might you be able to book a session with an advisor at John Lewis for instance. I went on their cancellation list once and got seen the following day.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 15/09/2006 21:55

you could well be right about the length. I do have a reserve dress - which I like, but not that mad keen on wearing it as everyone I know at the wedding has seen it before. dh thinks that's stupid but I think it's a good enough reason to look for something new...
