Ladies day at Races - help me not be mistaken for a horse (please ....)

Feeling quite desperate! DH and I never go out ourselves and this will be the first time in about 7 years. He's been invited to a thing at the races with dinner etc.

Probably because I never go 'out' out I'm dreading this. I'm a size 10/12 but that is misleading as I have a really big bum and not particularly nice legs. If I have to show my legs I'd need to have opaque tights on. My only good feature is a nice waist.

I'm getting to the point I feel like cancelling because I feel so self conscious and worried that DH's colleagues will think (know) I'm a big frump.

I tried this dress Charli Dress but it was so wrong but my hips/bum and it was my final hope!

I normally lurk on these boards but would be so grateful for any advice / suggestions please.

Tat dress doesn't look good on the model OP so I wouldn't worry that it didn't look great on you Smile

I have big hips and bum but tend to embrace my shape a I would be wearing a sack if I attempted to hide it!

I wouldn't wear plain black to the races, especially not on ladies day. Black and white, or black and cream but not plain black.

Have you got anything in your wardrobe with some colour in that you feel comfortable in that could be dressed up?

FlossyMoo Thank you so much for those links. It's really kind of you to help and I'm going to hit the shops tomorrow and try some of those suggestions on.

Polly I know what you mean about wearing black - I'm scared I'll look like a waitress or something but I just don't feel like I can pull off anything dressy enough! I was horrified when I googled pictures from previous years of all the outfits from the ladies day.

I think I'm just so out of the way of going out and getting dressed up and I feel like I have no confidence in my appearance at the moment.

Thank you so much for your help.

You can always change a black dress by adding colourful accessories. Happy shopping OP Grin

I've never been to ladies day at the races, but when you see some of the photos in the press there are lots of horror outfits. I'm sure you will never look like some of the horrors.

When I last went to the races, people were wearing all sorts even in the premier enclosure.

The first time I went to the races, I didn't have a clue what to wear. I kept it simple with a shirt type dress, belt and heels and didn't feel out of place. Although I would have dressed up more for ladies day.

Wear something you feel comfortable in. Emphasise your lovely waist. If it is black, inject a little colour.

I do like the flared dress that flossy linked. That would fit in perfectly and looks like it would suit your shape.

Good look with your shopping, try hard not to worry. When you get to the races, the excitement of the racing will take over and you will have a fantastic time.
