Colouring greying hair without covering the grey!

Hi all, I have been going grey for quite a few years and decided not to colour as I really did not want to get caught up in the cycle of roots etc.. I have about 30-40% grey hair and recently it has become neither one thing nor the other and needs a bit of a lift. Any advice on how to brighten it a bit without covering the greys or is that even possible? All advice appreciated.

Highlights are the way forward I have about 30% grey at the front, of my (previously brown hair). Now I have three tones interspersed - (a brown, mid brown/caramel and blonde) so the greys are almost invisible, but also as its not a solid colour you don't get the really obvious root line thing. Maybe go for one colour in your original shade, and then a couple of lighters ones - a good hairdresser should be able to advise. Have fun!

I have a semi put over everything that's a shade or so lighter than my natural colour. It makes the grey turn into blonde highlights.

I'm about the same although greyer than you, about 70%. My hair was dyed dark brown so the regrowth was really noticeable.

Once I had a couple of inches of regrowth my hairdresser lightened all the dyed hair to a blondish colour (I had also had a shot with colorb4 which made it go blorange, which was horrible). She then painted on a grey colour but only on the dyed parts, avoiding the grey roots by painting it on. It looked great for 6 weeks or so but now the grey colour has faded and it's back to blondish with very grey roots, about 4 inches now. Not bad but I think I'll go back and have the grey colour done again, it toned with the roots really well. I also had my hair cut short, which helps speed up the growing out stage.

Have you tried one of the purple shampoos?

Thanks for all the replies. I like the idea of the grey highlights -I didn't know such a thing was possible. I am intrigued - what does a purple shampoo do?

Purple shampoo/conditioner neutralises any brassy tones in grey/silver/platinum hair. I used to have a flash of natural silver in my hair and purple shampoos really made a difference.
