Here's what you need to know:

Very dry lips
Dark brown hair
Blue eyes
Fair skin
Teeth are cream rather than white

I'm not afraid of colour so fairly heavily pigmented would be good. I guess I'm looking for something to wear in autumn/winter if that influences your colour choices. Daytime rather than nighttime.

Budget - ideally under 15 but I may be able to have my arm twisted for a really excellent product!

Thanks Smile

I think you need to try things on but I recommend Dior diorific lipstick. It's pricey but stays on really well and they are wearable shades. I use mine as a day or evening lipstick, although I have quite a few from the range now I still love the first red one I bought. Got me into wearing proper colour and now I can't be bothered with lipstick that comes off easily.

I'd suggest that you go to Mac or similar and get them to apply the colours so you can see what's better on you.

If you have dry lips, then get a good lip balm as lipstick doesn't look great if applied on dry, flaky lips. A matte one such as the Nuxe Reve du Miel one in the pot works well under lipsticks IMO.

A blue toned lipstick will make your teeth look whiter, while a yellow toned lipstick will make them look more yellow.

I personally really like something like Mac Ruby Woo which is blue toned. I use Mac Absolute Power which was a limited edition but it's more or less the same colour as Ruby Woo. I have ben told (by Mac employees) that the Absolute Power lipstick is available in Mac outlets in the UK.

Yellow toned lipsticks make my teeth look so yellow, so I avoid them as much as possible.

Also, it's not a lipstick but a lip pencil, but Mac Cherry is amazing when used all over the lip. I've had loads of compliments wearing it. I sometimes use a bit of Mac Chestnut in the corners like Kandee Johnson does here and it looks amazing:
I don't use the red powder on top as she does, but it still works fine :)

Thanks Carpaccio - I have heard that Ruby Woo is a colour that suits everyone but that it is a very drying formula so I've been avoiding it. Maybe I need to go to Mac and have a play around. Thanks for the Nuxe lipbalm tip, matte lip balm sounds good!

Thanks for the recommendation Zen, beautiful packaging but a little bit 'ouch' at the price! Although maybe it's actually better value that cheaper lipstick that wears off horribly

Chanel red suits everyone Nd stays on better than any other lipstick I've tried. Cannot recommend it enough.

Carpaccio · 14/07/2014 17:06

I actually think that the retro matte lipsticks (like ruby woo) are less drying than other Mac lipsticks. There are some of them that I can't wear two days in a row because they dry my lips out that much.

Whitershadeofpale · 14/07/2014 17:19

If you have very dry lips and it's more for daytime I'd reccommend Lipstick Queen's medieval or one of the chubby sticks either two ton tomato or mightiest marachino.

MadMaddox · 14/07/2014 17:22

I have heard very good things about MAC lipsticks: their MAC Red and Russian Red are apparently very good.

Marylou2 · 14/07/2014 17:44

Before you go to choose a lip colour, treat yourself to this months Red Magazine. There's a Rodial lip balm/treatment as a freebie on the front and it's fab!
My favourite reds are Mac Ladybug and Russian Red.Also love Nars Jungle.

yazzy85 · 14/07/2014 17:47

Mac ruby woo is very pretty, but as its a matte finish it is drying, if you put a layer of lip balm on before applying that solves it

Ooh thanks for the tip Marylou!

I think I need to try on some Mac lipsticks. I am scared of the dry factor though - I even find Chubby Sticks a bit drying! I'm properly Sahara lipped despite wearing lip balm all the time and drinking loads of water.

Lisa Eldridge did a video about red lipsticks a while back and she recommended a Maybelline Super Stay 14hr lipstick saying it is very long lasting but not drying.

She mentions loads of products at different price points during the video.

She mentions two Maybelline super stay colours starting at around 5:00 in the video: www.lisaeldridge.com/video/25389/ultimate-guide-to-red-lips/#.U8QSiLEuLKc

Brilliant Carpaccio, thanks a lot. They're a lot cheaper than Mac too!

Rimmel Kate Moss 22 is lovely - it's blue-toned on me and lasts ages even though it's not drying at all.

botanicbaby · 14/07/2014 21:35

Mac Russian Red would look great on you. Saying that as you have same colouring as a good friend and she looks stunning whenever she wears it Grin

SwedishEdith · 14/07/2014 22:32

Maybelline Hollywood Red is very wearable

Lottapianos · 15/07/2014 07:20

Thanks so much for all the suggestions, you have all been really helpful and I'm looking forward to going shopping!
