If you could buy one thing from NYC...

what would it be?

If for example you were there on a flying visit and might have just a couple of hours to do a very focused get in, get it, get out purchase.

£/$ rate is quite good so seems a shame to pass up the opportunity!

HermioneWeasley · 13/07/2014 20:25

Coach bags

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 13/07/2014 20:27

I'd go to J Crew, a Sam Edelman stockist, Coach and Banana Republic.

Rosa · 13/07/2014 20:27

I would pick 1 department store and go from the top to the bottom.....

MooMinCow · 13/07/2014 20:37

Saks Fifth Avenue. Still regretting not buying this Loeffler Randall Rider Satchel

Or if you're a beauty/makeup junkie go to Sephora, sign up for their loyalty card and get loads of samples/minis

Don't bother with Macy's. Too big

nickdrakeslovechild · 13/07/2014 20:37

Sephora make up!

kickassangel · 13/07/2014 20:55

Budget? In ascending order:

macey's is the biggest in the world.

Bloomingdale's where NYers shop.

SAKS for looking at shoes that cost $1,000 and giggling at the idea of walking in them.

Super cheap - Iheart NY from a street vendor

NY has 12% tax so not massively cheap unless you get to TJ Max

Floisme · 13/07/2014 21:16

I think New York is a bit over rated as a shopping destination to be honest. Of course, if you buy designer then it must be fab but, if you don't, what has it got other than some good posh second hand shops? Its high street is better than it used to be but it's still a joke apart from J Crew. I think that, for variety and originality, London beats it hands down.

HomerPigeon · 13/07/2014 21:58

Ok so maybe not such a great shopping opportunity! I do like Coach bags but can't seem to access the US website so can't work out how much cheaper they are there.

Coach bag def.

kickassangel · 13/07/2014 23:10

full retail they are usually $200 +

A couple of hours isnt enough time to get in & out of the city if that's all you've got, even using txis. In theory you can do it but i wouldn't risk it.

You might find that the airport shopping is pretty good. I usually get stuff at Heathrow as I leave, it's pretty much the same price as having landed in the states, but the most up to date things.

Floisme · 13/07/2014 23:33

I should have added that I think it's a great city! But for shopping ....I dunno, I was a bit disappointed. It seems to have fabulous designer shopping and really good thrift and vintage shops but not much in between. Or if there is, I never found it.

nickdrakeslovechild · 14/07/2014 21:46

I think it depends on what you are into, uggs are a lot cheaper converse were not. I am a make up junkie and all the brands I like are a lot cheaper there. If you like high street then forever 21 in times square is great.
