Need a smart dress that won't date easily - which shops should i try?

I've got a special occasion evening dinner coming up at work and it's being held at a lovely hotel. Dress code is smart.

None of my dresses fit since I had dd and I want to buy something nice. I want to buy something that won't date and I can use as a staple smart dress. In the past I've bought fairly cheap things that are in fashion that year and then I don't end up wearing them much as they look dated. I'm 39 now so don't want something too young looking or too trendy.

I don't have much spare money but thought I could get something in the sales.

Any suggestions as to shops/brands I should try?
I am quite petite, 5'3" so often find dresses a bit too long.

LK Bennet. I'm 5'2 as well, and I often pay a tenner or less to a dressmaking service to adjust the length.

Im 5'2 and I find Phase Eight dresses end at the bottom.of my knee so a perfect length. Also very good quality and a flattering fit.

I second Me and Em. They're expensive but their clothes don't scream 'I bought this for a party' so I think you get more wear out of them. I'm also 5'3 and I've found them to be ok, length-wise. They also have good sales

I agree with Jigsaw, LK Bennett, Hobbs sometimes have some nice things, etc.

Jaegar I think is better for coats. I find their sizing to be completely bizarre. Like a size 8 dress will be hanging off me, but a size 10 pair of trousers I can't even get over my hips (despite being an 8-10 in all other shops, since forever).

Totally weird.
