I have become obsessed with the perfect cocktail dress. Help me or slap me...

For no particular reason. I have no weddings this year and the DC are small, so an event is more likely to mean the pub than, I don't know, Ascot.

Still, a very good friend is having a city wedding next year and I just like the idea of having the perfect dress in my wardrobe, ready for anything.

I look embalmed in black, but I like the idea of something dark. I love this posted by WIT, but a) it's black and b) the silhouette is actually pretty heinous for a human-shaped body.

Any thoughts?

What size? Max budget?

I love the Roksanda Ilincic, which is typical because it has both black AND yellow - equivalent of skintone kryptonite for me...

I have to half Thankyou and half berate you for starting this thread and then being directed to the outnet with lovely pictures of lovely things where I then purchased at 11pm two 'essential' dresses which I didn't know I needed or even know I wanted.

i'm no help whatsoever, but that dress you linked to in the op... wouldn't people be able to look down the back and see your bum?

MrsLettuce you have exquisite taste, and I need to hide the credit card. I love the detail on the back of the Issa dress (and also love a sleeve) but am unsure of the colour - it says grape, looks a bit brown to me?
All the VW are gorgeous, as is the VB, though the latter maybe a little too 'day'?

ProjectGainsborough, I fear your original dress would look a bit muttony on me, although I suspect you are half my age - could you order/return? But many gorgeous choices... What are good colours for you?

Anyone have a view on how low the V on the DVF dress would be? My only other DVF dress has a round neck, so not really much clue as to how low cut it would be, as I am considerably shorter than the model.
