Balls - if you have short hair, do you do anything with it for special/formal occasions?

Had a pre-wedding season haircut just now. She's gone shorter than I expected. It is a nice haircut and I like it but I think it's too short to do anything with. It kind of looks like this now, so cropped to the neck at the back, longer front, quite a heavy fringe (though not as heavy a fringe as in that picture).

I was going to do some serious backcombing and pin some back at the crown of my head to make volume, but I think the hair now being cropped into the neck will make that look silly from behind? Other suggestions I've seen online probably won't work - I look silly with a fringe clipped back, my hair tends not to hold any type of curl, and 'pretty' clips just make me look about 8!

Other than that... well, if you have hair like this, do you actually bother to do anything for a formal event? Or do you just try and blow-dry it nicely and cover it in hairspray?

Aaargh.

I don't have short hair but my SIL does and she always makes it look lovely for occasions.

She often uses the straighteners to give it a slight wave. Also I know she recently bought some kind of gadget which gives those 1920/30s finger waves and clips her fringe back to the side. Otherwise she combs it all back a bit like this I guess. I know that doesn't really match with what you've said but perhaps try googling actresses/celebrities with short hair to see how they do it as lots of photos will be from 'events'.

Well, now I dyed it as well for a bit extra oompf and it's gone a lot darker than I expected Blush

So now I have a very short, dark bob. Basically Katie Holmes. And I Googled it as you suggested and it turns out that Katie Holmes... does nothing!

Hmm. Not entirely sure how this will work with a 'pretty' 1950s dress!

Would it accept having the fringe tong curled under? The rest of the hair is longer in the picture, but the prom dress pic here is what I was thinking of for the general look

What are is your dress like? The right headband could well work.

I noticed a close up of how to wear a bandana in that article I linked. It's worth a try.

Thurlow · 08/07/2014 22:09

Dress is.actually very girly, pink and green flowered Monsoon job. I will experiment with tonging the fringe!

A very sleek, 'done' look is probably best, yeah. Any chance of havong a blow dry on the morning of the do?

Balls his formal look with short hair

Thurlow · 09/07/2014 10:33

lady Grin I might try that!

That hairband is, err, interesting, MrsLettuce.

I'm loving the bandana look and I think that will definitely work. Maybe not with this particular dress but it will with others. No chance of a blowdry (I'm actually getting ready in motorway service station toilets, because I'm classy like that Wink) but will go for the sleek and shiny look and hope it works.

Comments so far at work have been nice (I'm making jokes about it being darker than I wanted) but someone did compare it to Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction - fine, but as a pale short-arse I'm not sure that's the best....!

I've got that haircut, but even shorter at the front. I use a thin, decorative hairband like the ones on here:

Also, that volumising power is brilliant for giving it a bit of .. well, volume. Make it look all punky.

Thurlow · 09/07/2014 13:49

Thanks sicaq. I'll go have a browse in the shops tomorrow and see what hairbands look like, and figure out how to give it some volume.
