Rouge noir type nail polish for my lovely mum

BillStickersIsInnocent · 07/07/2014 20:00

My mum is going through pretty gruelling chemotherapy for breast cancer. She read up that dark nail polishes can prevent the nail from falling out, checked with her consultant, and it seems to have worked so far.

She's been painting her nails for the first time in her life and really enjoying it. I want to buy her some different dark polishes, she's tried and liked a couple of mine (Essie Sole Mate and Chanel Rouge Noir) but doesn't like the Chanel brush much.

Any recommendations for beautiful dark polish, preferably a glamorous brand and extra points for gorgeous packaging? I'll need to buy online as live in the middle of nowhere.

Tia

I was going to suggest Essie Sole Mate, it's beautiful.

How adventurous is she? Essie Midnight Cami is a beautiful, chic navy blue. OPI's 'Honk if you love OPI' is a really nice dary berry-purple. I also really love charcoal metallic polishes - I have a couple that are lovely. Essie 'Over the Top' and Chanel 'Black Pearl' - I think the Essie one is nicer.

Other nail polishes I love are from Korres - they are on Amazon, and are really gorgeous.

How thoughtful you are - I wish your Mum all the best Smile

Oh, also to say although it's not very dark, 'Cajun Shrimp' from OPI is a stunning bright pink and 'Geranium' from Essie is a gorgeous...well...geranium colour, both are really cheery but chic. Not sure they are suitable for what she wants, but possibly.

How about Tom Ford? Everything he does is luxury Smile .

Some of his dark shades are reviewed here

The Bordeaux Lust looks stunning.

Thanks for your Mum btw.

Meet me on the Star Ferry by OPI is a gorgeous plummy colour with gold glittery bits that really show up in sunlight & strong artificial light www.vampyvarnish.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/OPI-Meet-Me-On-The-Star-Ferry.jpg

Peace & Love & OPI is another lovely one that changes colour depending on the angle. Sort of like a black opal ommorphia.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/opi-peace-love-opi-swatch-4.jpg

I love this Dior one

Great brush and quality

How about the Clinique nail enamel - think good for sensitive skin? For dark shades try black honey or made of steel.

Tom Ford nail polishes are IMO a bit disappointing. I have two of the colours (viper and smoke red) and they don't apply evenly, seem to take a while to dry and just never end up looking nice on the nail compared to others.

Guerlain and Dior make great polishes and the brushes are really nice (both brands use a similar brush) - flat with rounded corners.
You can see the brush here: www.temptalia.com/guerlain-rouge-denfer-121-le-vernis-review-photos-swatches

I prefer the Guerlain polishes as they are very glossy so I don't feel that a top coat is necessary.

Talisin · 07/07/2014 22:15

For some nice packaging then how about a set of mini polishes like this which would give her both dark polishes for now and some lighter ones to look forward to using post chemo.

Secretsquirrel13 · 07/07/2014 22:55

Dior rouge garconne and Essie wicked are very similar.

polyhymnia · 07/07/2014 23:11

Don't do dark red polishes myself but Essie is lovely quality and easy to use - much better than Chanel in that respect.

botanicbaby · 08/07/2014 00:39

Not what people would class as a glamorous brand but i think Revlon's Vixen is the closest you will ever get in colour to Chanel's iconic rougenoir.

botanicbaby · 08/07/2014 00:41

Thanks for your mum, wishing all the best here too!

Thanks all, great ideas.

Talisin thank you, I've just ordered the mini OPI set, some lovely colours in there and you're right, she won't need to wear dark polish for ever. Smile
