Where are the best places to buy a 1950s style outfit please?

I am going to an event that requires me to be dressed in the style of the mid 1950s, think teen (hah!) circle prom dresses and the like. Now, I don't really want to spend £££ as it isn't the kind of thing I will wear again and it will probably take a bit of a battering at this event anyway.

So I went to Vivien of Holloway and was Shock at the prices. I mean, beautifully made, but I just can't justify spending that much.

Is there anywhere else I should look for dresses that will still look good but won't be too pricey for what will be worn once and probably get rather trashed?

Look at the Lindybop website. I had a dress from there that was lovely quality and very cheap compared to other places. Not sure if they will have exactly what you're looking for but worth a try!

ScrambledSmegs · 04/07/2014 10:52

Oh, that's great, thank you. They have a sale on! Yay!

Hell bunny are very reasonable too

ScrambledSmegs · 04/07/2014 11:04

Does Hell Bunny have a website? I can find their stuff on other websites but I can't seem to find one for them.

I am using google search though which seems to be acting a bit funny today.

I wore a hell bunny petticoat under my lindybop dress and it was great! I got mine from a local shop though so not sure about a website. They were the best petticoats I found, and they had some lovely hell bunny dresses in the shop too.

Ebay can be quite good if you have the time.
But the buyitnow stuff tends to be much more expensive.

Bearandcub · 04/07/2014 11:40

Etsy has a ton of stuff.

ScrambledSmegs · 04/07/2014 12:05

Yes I've looked at ebay but I am a little scared of it due to having had some bad experiences in the past. I suppose I should get over it though.

Struggling at the moment with the sheer volume of stuff online, actually. Can't decide whether to do day dress or prom dress style, think day may have to do as prom dresses then seemed to have chiffon layers and accessories such as gloves.

I'm late 30s and a size 12 - 14 (the 14 being my bust, unfortunately), I'm feeling a tad aggrieved as I'm not the keenest on dressing up!

Etsy - isn't that usually really expensive?

I've just had a look at Etsy and it really varies.
But quite a lot of the stuff is expensive (well in my book it is anyway)
If you type 1950s into ebay there's loads of stuff and a lot is really reasonable.
If you have time then you could try it.
I think they have to accept returns now.

I don't know if any of these would be any good to you but, if so, PM me and I'll put you in touch with the lady who makes them. She is a UK-based small business who is just starting out locally to me.

I get mine on Amazon (search 1950s dresses). Depends on how much £££ is for you but there are gorgeous ones under £35.

SirRaymondClench · 05/07/2014 21:33

I LOVE 1950s circle dresses! I would wear them every day if I could! Let us know which one you get.

gillygillywhatsit · 05/07/2014 21:40

Try Collectif. Very cool 50's inspired clothes.

scarletoconnor · 05/07/2014 21:46

Try Nyla Rose gorgeous 50's dresses that you will definitely want to wear again :) really good prices and some gorgeous shabby chic gifts you will end up buying if youre not careful

She has a Facebook site and is doing a dress of the dayoffoffer today with a 50's style dress with money off...she does a different dress of the day every day with money off through facebook.

I think the official name is nyla rose gifts and interiors but typing nyla rose in fb and google will find you the shop

MrsLettuce · 05/07/2014 21:59

voodoo vixen is worth a look too. A wiggle dress might be good for you.

black with sleeves

again

Pinkdressonthewall · 05/07/2014 22:20

Another vote for Collectif - good for the price and many could be "de-retroed" with different styling. Use code Ree10 at the checkout for a 10% discount.

iklboo · 05/07/2014 22:35

Doh!!! Turns out I've got Nyla Rose dresses - just through Amazon. They are gorgeous!

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 05/07/2014 22:36

I got a good, cheap-ish dress from this ebay seller which did OK for a black tie do. Oh, and I went OTT with gloves, stockings, pearls etc going for a goth/retro note. Depends what your event is I guess.

Oh, and from someone with a 16 bust/18 arse; 14 bust/12 arse is a blessing, it really is! Grin
