Too old for a skater dress?

sergeantmajor · 19/06/2014 14:53

Is it just me...
I've been looking for nice summer-in-the-city dress, i.e. lightweight but without pineapples or bare shoulders, etc. But so many of the styles have flouncy skater skirts, flowing from a high waist and ending mid thigh.
At a dignified 42, that's just not me.
I'd like to defiantly say that you're never too old for anything, but those dresses make me feel as if I'd be prancing around with a bow in my hair.
(oh god I even SOUND old....)

If you're too old, so am I. I find the skater style suits me. (I also have one with parrots on. No bow in my hair however!)

grumblepuss · 19/06/2014 16:15

If they suit you then wear them.
I'm 30 and look shit in them.

EdithDickie · 19/06/2014 19:14

I love skater dresses and look ace in them Grin

No hair bows either!

EdithDickie · 19/06/2014 19:14

Ps am 34

Elsiequadrille · 19/06/2014 19:16

I'm only a few years younger than you and wear them. Definitely wear if they suit you, you're not too old at all.

Branleuse · 19/06/2014 19:17

im 38 and i love them. Im hourglass shape so theyre an easy wear for me

BearPear · 19/06/2014 19:31

I'm on holiday somewhere hot at the moment and saw a lady in one, complete with pineapple or other fruity print. She was at least 60 and the dress was doing her no favours, even though her figure was ok. It was just so out of place. But if she felt good, who am I to judge?

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 19/06/2014 20:33

I am nearly 40 and short. I find that loads of them look way too short on me!

velourvoyageur · 19/06/2014 20:36

I adore skater dresses!

I'm early twenties, as in 20, so maybe I shouldn't be posting on this thread....
but I think it's one of the most flattering type of dress ever. That and shifts and (some) tunics. No age limit on any of those. You just need to find the right one for you and I bet you'll look great.

Just ordered a cheap sky blue one from the Topshop sale this morning, can't wait till it gets here, in this heat.

Remember you can always get stuff altered.

Pusspuss1 · 19/06/2014 20:38

I agree - they just look little-girly to me. I'm in my mid 30s and wouldn't wear one. Knee length looks much better IMHO.

JohnCusacksWife · 19/06/2014 20:57

I think anyone over 16 is too old for a skater dress!

MrsJamin · 19/06/2014 21:16

I'm 36 and they seem to suit me! I like the neckline and they are very easy to wear on the school run etc.

I wouldn't wear one but then I'm nearly 34 with large breastage and a large tummy. I'd look very matronly. I think on the right person they can look nice.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 19/06/2014 21:21

Am also 42 and would feel daft in one.

happybubblebrain · 19/06/2014 21:22

I'm nearly 42 and I would wear one if they suited me.

The fashion police should bore off with their ageism.

ChickenFajitasAndNachos · 19/06/2014 21:24

I've tried a few on and given up on them. I'm 45 and feel like I should be skipping through the hills like Heide. It's the waist position that's all wrong for me. I have lots of other short dresses, I always seem to find something nice in Apricot.

RobinSparkles · 19/06/2014 21:26

They suit me as I'm an hourglass shape, although I wished they'd make them longer. They're far too short for me and I'm a short arse! You can see my underwear and it makes me feel self conscious.

I'm 30

SureFootedWhispher · 19/06/2014 21:29

I'm 36 but under 5 foot so I love them. Not too long!

50ShadesOfSummer · 20/06/2014 07:34

I think it depends on figure rather than age. I'm a size 10 with definite hips but small waist so I find they flatter me - along with high waisted styles generally.

I also don't find (most of them) too short. About mid-thigh on me of average height.

Batmansbuttocks · 20/06/2014 10:59

I'm 42 and rock the skater dress. But I think you probably need to be a size 12 and under and if over 5'7" need a 'tall' range dress.
Also depends on the dress of course.

me today in the blue

I'm size 10 and 5'9".

JohnCusacksWife · 20/06/2014 12:05

That's a lovely dress, Batman. But to me it's not a skater dress - it's too long. When I say skater dress I think of something like this which looks way too little girly for an adult (to me).

Elsiequadrille · 20/06/2014 12:08

Maybe it does depend on figure, somewhat. I'm not hourglass, but I'm size 10 with size 8 waist. Though my skater dress, and skirts, look like neither of those links. Mine are mostly Boden, and probably on the matronly, rather than girly, side Grin

whereisshe · 20/06/2014 12:15

I think they look ridiculous on most people - the waist is always too high and the skirt too short, it makes the proportions look funny as if they're designed for a much shorter person or ran out of fabric.

whereisshe · 20/06/2014 12:16

Batman I wouldn't call that a skater dress, it's a fit and flare dress - different shape (not as full skirt) and longer.
