Boden kids' clothes - size up or down?

EmGee · 19/06/2014 13:16

Have never bought anything from Boden for kids and before I do, wondered if as a rule, they are generously sized?

I have a fairly petite 4.5 year old (about 100cm tall and 15kg).

Live abroad so don't want to pay for postage and have to return at extra cost if sizing is off.

I don't think they are a generous fit, but not small either. My DD is tall for her age but very slim and I find Boden a much better fit for her than other brands if I order the actual age that she is, iykwim. If your DD is very petite they might be too long, depending on what you're ordering, but they probably won't swamp her in the waist etc like some other brands might.

I think it depends on what clothes you get. Generally they are quite slim fitting. My ds is average/slightly tall height for his age and slim, and fits true to size.

But my dd is tall and big for her age - she's same age as yours (5 in October). She's the height of some 6yos, and is very broad - 110cm and about 20kg I think!

I always get at least 5-6 for her - the summer dresses, skirts, shorts, and trousers are fine that size, but the winter/party dresses seem to come up much smaller, so actually next time I get that kind of stuff I'll go for 6-7.

For dresses and tops I'd go for 5-6 if I was you, as better to be too big than not.

They are slim fitting and made for the average height child. I have always sized up so I get longer wear as the clothes are not cheap and although they are bigger on dd and ds they don't look ridiculous.

PurpleWithaMysteryBun · 19/06/2014 14:30

My dd has very similar stats to yours and is in 4-5

rootypig · 19/06/2014 16:20

I agree with cath - they come up as true to size for the slim child. 19mo DD is in the middle of the centiles for height and lower for weight, and is in their 18mo-2yr with some room.

For adult women, I size down. I am a UK10 and their UK8 fits generously.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 19/06/2014 18:29

True to size verging on small. Not very helpful I know. Dresses and skirts and tops have been fine in dd's usual size but we've had to size up twice on shirts! She's average build I'd say. Definitely not overweight. Everything else is 7-8 but shorts are age 10!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 19/06/2014 18:47

Tops are tiny, bottoms are huge IME. My children are tall and slim.

Elsiequadrille · 19/06/2014 19:19

I find them true to size, but verging on short side. Unless I have taller than average children. Sizing up makes them too wide, obviously!

princessdave · 19/06/2014 19:38

I always size up in their t-shirts for DD. She's quite small but not yet 3 (sept) so still wears last summers 2-3 tops & this summers 3-4 (which I anticipate she'll also wear next summer so good value IMO). Dresses can be quite long so I tend to order both sizes to try on. She's still in age 2 shorts/skorts/skirts thanks to elastic/adjustable waists & can wear age 3 for the same reason.

Elsiequadrille · 19/06/2014 19:39

Dresses and skirts on short side, would add.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 19/06/2014 19:52

The shorts sizing has only applied to this years ones. Last years age 7's still fit. Hence my confusion as to why 7, 8, 9's didn't fit this year.

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 19/06/2014 20:32

DS is fairly short and I never find that Boden clothes, especially tops and shorts, come up short on him. He is 6.

CharlesRyder · 19/06/2014 20:37

My DS is 115cm and 22kg and in 6-7. Agree they are narrow and long. DS is built broad and the 6-7 is a little long.

ColdCottage · 27/12/2020 22:04

How about the children's shoes?

FreeButtonBee · 27/12/2020 22:14

I find them big but my children are on the scrawny side! They never fit anything width wise (DD is 8 in 6 weeks abs stills wearing an age 4 cardi - granted its cropped now but no issue with width). I do still it as the quality is good but often have to stuff away or take in the waist significantly

Housewife2010 · 28/12/2020 08:41

Boden have a size chart in their website so it's worth checking that.

Oly4 · 28/12/2020 17:33

I find them true to size on my skin to average sized kids!

Oly4 · 28/12/2020 17:34

Ps they are beautiful quality
