90's outfit required. Please help, I am desperate!

I've been invited to a friends birthday party in 3 weeks time. It's a 90s theme and I absolutely detest dressing up. Dressing up aside, I'm really looking forward to it as it will be my first night away since having dd at Christmas and I really need a break!

I am early 20s, size 16. Sort of hourglass figure (if I wear my super suck in pants). Legs and bingo wings need to be covered! Also needs to be as cheap as possible as I am super skint.

It looks like everyone is going for general 90s fashion rather than specific characters, so I'd like to do the same. I was born in 1990 so I'm not totally sure what people wore in the 90s as I was a kid. All I can think of is clueless and I really would not suit that kind of thing Confused I had a quick look around Primark at the weekend but saw nothing at all. I'm sure a few months ago the shops were full of 90s crap!

HELP!!! If anyone could point me towards somewhere I could buy anything suitable I'd be eternally grateful Grin

Jeans, lumberjack shirt and DM boots for a grunge look?

FelixFelix · 03/06/2014 21:03

I look AWFUL in jeans. This is so hard! Every thing I can think of will look shit (can you tell I am self conscious post-baby? Confused)

just make yourself look a mess

sanityawol · 03/06/2014 21:05

Long flowery loose dress and DM style boots - the girly version of the grunge look?

LeftyLoony · 03/06/2014 21:06

these were big too

LeftyLoony · 03/06/2014 21:07

Yup Sanity, I used to do that look. With a leather biker jacket and a LOT of kohl (cringe)

sanityawol · 03/06/2014 21:11

Me too Lefty but with army surplus para boots.

Or there was the crochet top over vest top, with very short cut off jeans over green 'velvet' leggings combo... again with para boots. Such a good look!

And I was so skinny at the time with such big feet my legs looked like golf clubs. Grin

LeftyLoony · 03/06/2014 21:12

this sort of dress with the DM boots, a beanie gat and a falling apart cardigan

sanityawol · 03/06/2014 21:13

Were shell suits late 80's, or did they make it into the 90's?

CheapBread · 03/06/2014 21:13

Just buy anything in top shop at the minute. I saw bum bags in new look too. Worst fashion decade. Don't forget the burgundy lipstick and velvet choker!

sanityawol · 03/06/2014 21:14

I'd only recommend them for comic effect. Absolutely nobody looks good in a shell suit as a fashion item.

sassytheFIRST · 03/06/2014 21:15

I always recommend going as one of the KLF.

paper boiler suit from pound land, whistle, trainers. Perhaps a plastic ice cream to lick.

You're bound for mumu land...

LeftyLoony · 03/06/2014 21:17

Very early 90s was the shell suit.

I had really lairy leggings.

Oh and I wore tie dye but I don't know if that was just me.

LeftyLoony · 03/06/2014 21:17

CheapBread - Rimmell Black Cherry lippy?

sanityawol · 03/06/2014 21:17

Oh, I forgot the manky cardy that had to go over the top of everything too.

LeftyLoony · 03/06/2014 21:19

Yep. More holes the better

FelixFelix · 03/06/2014 21:20

Good suggestions!

Grunge seems to be the easiest I think. I have a very good fitting long plaid shirt with roll up sleeves that I can wear with black leggings. Could buy a black bowler hat cheap. I have very long hair that I can make wavy/messy and some tattoos! Possibly thinking I can style it out.

Which of these boots? these or these which I secretly LOVE

Currently searching bum bags!

What sort of jewellery (if any) and makeup?

I'm guessing that you might need to have a rummage on charity shops. Bound to be full of 90s stuff that's been cleared out of wardrobes for ebing too dated.

sanityawol · 03/06/2014 21:24

Tie dye wasn't just you... Blush

Loads of mad leggings here too.

Acid house just about made it into 1990, so baggy smiley face t-shirt, leggings (cycle shorts if you're nuts), baseball cap, big hoop earrings, whistle (bad perm optional).

Spice Girls appeared in the 90's so could use that as inspiration?

Another of my looks was baggy dungarees over vest top with legs rolled up to the top of my DMs

Yes to burgundy lipstick too.

I thought I was such an individual Wink Although I did come from a small village so stood out a bit.

PeachTrees · 03/06/2014 21:25

I agree with charity shops.we threw a 90s party for a friend fee years back and a friend went for a rummage in a charity shop and found an old Reebok hoody and awful 90s tracky bottoms. he was by far best dressed and only paid a couple of quid...whereas we spent a lot more Envy.

Those glitter boots are amazing!

I wore a lot of chunky silver jewellery with stuff like amber or amethysts in the 90s. Glitter make up and glitter hair spray was a thing. I once went clubbing in glow in the dark glitter eyeshadow. I used to leave a trail of glitter wherever I went.

FelixFelix · 03/06/2014 21:26

Will buy one of those dodgy stretchy choker things! That's one thing I remember from the 90s Grin

I have a dark reddy purple mac lipstick somewhere. Would that do?

VioletGoesVintage · 03/06/2014 21:27

No!!! The 90s was, like, yesterday. I was a student. Surely it isn't time to be holding ironic 90s-themed parties?

Humph!

Anyway. I wore:

-Coloured jeans and a lumberjack shirt.
-Floral dresses, sometimes over a short-sleeved crop top, with a baggy denim shirt or cardigan over the top.
-Baggy patchwork trousers and a vest top.
-Bodies (yeee-ouch - don't recommend) with jeans.

Accessories were either a choker on a velvet band, Wild Plum lipstick from the Boots natural collection and, sometimes, a Baker Boy hat. Dear God.

Pompbear · 03/06/2014 21:28

oh yes a choker necklace! dark lippy a dewberry oil or white musk perfume!!!

Pompbear · 03/06/2014 21:29

and take a bottle of archers!
