World war one dress up day

My daughters school are having a world war one dress up day, I also work there sonhave to dress up too.

Any ideas what we can wear, cant really find many pictures on the web of girls clothese for that time.

I was thinking for me long black skirt and high neck white ruffle blouse and flat black shoes, don't want to be spending loads for one day!!

For DD: white shirt with sleeves rolled up to elbow; EITHER pinafore dress in blue or beige, OR dungarees; peaked cap with hair bundled up underneath it = woman munitions worker.

Adult teacher is easy, dark maxi skirt high necked white blouse, seems to be pretty much a uniform.

Girls seem to go from white frilly Edwardian smocks to simpler dark dresses.

What do you think of this dress for dd, if I could get a pinny and shawl for it?

Looking at those school photos you just need a dark jumper or shirt under it.

At least it's warm. DD2 didn't enjoy cotton dress and knee socks for WW2, in the snow.

They had currant buns so yes probably.

Good, Ive been asked to help with food for our village WW1 thing.
Simple white blouses and long skirts would look good for serving, unfortunately I haven't got one.

Just do what I did look in your local charirty shops! Never been in there before, but got a blouse and skirt for £4.50!!!

DS's school recently did this. The girls mostly wore plain dresses, or simple pattern on a simple style; or were nurses. The teachers and staff were very "Downton", and more nurses. There were a few chimney sweeps and soldiers too.

I think the women in dungarees munitions workers were more WW2? I am happy to be corrected though.

It was women in WW1 doing work seen as traditionally male that was one of the major things that then tipped the debate on women's suffrage.

I'm high jacking this thread as my DS's school are doing a WW1 assembly where children are required to dress up "in their Sunday Best a La ww1"

I haven't got a clue and am rather crap at these things so please please please someone help me out and guide me in the right direction - how can I kit my D'S out in ww1 clothes? ???

Can I gatecrash and ask for a bit of help too please?

DS3 is 8 and has to dress as a WW2 evacuee for a day out to a manor house.

It's the first week in November and will probably be a bit a bit chilly so will have to dress him warmly. Don't want to spend too much and am happy to scour charity shops.

Any ideas?

Aimlessly, our school do a similar trip and boys usually just wear shorts, shirt, jumper, knee socks and school shoes.
I will be going on this trip and have been looking for a 40s style suit, I think I will try the charity shops but don't want to spend too much.

DP said they wore shorts. He should be warm enough with some long socks though.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a suit in a charity shop and you could add a brooch to give it a vintage look.
