What do you scrimp on and what do you is splurge on?

Lottapianos · 01/06/2014 09:55

Splurge:
Footwear
Coats and jackets
Hairdresser
Daily SPF (Bioderma)
Bras

Scrimp:
Trousers - New Look skinnies are fab
Pants - M&S
Handbags
T shirts - Primary or H&M usually
Skincare - use oil cleansing, Astral moisturiser, blue Nivea as night cream and skin loves it all!

What do you feel is worth splurging on and where do you feel cheaper versions are just as good?

revolutionarytoad · 01/06/2014 10:24

Scrimp- underwear. The most I've spent on a bra is about £8 and the last time I bought pants were black 5 pack ones from Primark for £2.50....
Also, tops. Cannot bring myself to spend more than £5 on a top.

I splurge on coats, leggings and shoes. I'm totally taken in by brands. Don't wear my converse that often but I'd never buy fake ones Blush I know, there's no difference really....
I'll pay anything under about £40 for a really good thick elastic pair of leggings since I wear them so much (live in my dr. martens).

Quite aware that my budget is probs significantly smaller than quite a few others' ones on here Grin so when I say splurge for a coat, I'm thinking £100 max.

revolutionarytoad · 01/06/2014 10:31

Ah forgot about hair etc.
Haven't paid to get my hair cut in about five years, I have to get it neatened up cos I have to be in an office for a bit this summer, first time in a hairdressers chair and I'm completely dreading it....
Thing is there's a great hairdresser I know who charged me about £7 for a normal cut/layers. And then another one who charged me about £30 for an absolute catastrophe, and she was going on about how she'd worked at Toni and Guy....really? Don't get the impression that hair is one of the things where you get what you pay for, is it?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/06/2014 10:32

Expensive things that are worth it, for me -
Benetint
Lancome Definicils mascara
Urban Decay eyeliners
Aveda Hand Relief
A good winter coat (but wouldn't spend more than £100 on that)
Fantasie bras (although tbh I try to buy them when they have money off)
Leather Converse (not super-expensive but not cheap either)
Badedas bubble bath (not super expensive but more than Radox!)

Things that I would never pay a lot of money for:
Handbags
Jeans
T-shirts
Stuff for summer holidays - bikinis, flip flops etc

Lottapianos · 01/06/2014 10:37

Revolutionary toad, I live in leggings too and usually buy the ten quid ones from Sainsburys. Do you think its worth spending more then? Where do you buy yours?

Underwear.

fairyfuckwings · 01/06/2014 10:51

Yes I want to know where to buy thick leggings from too.

I used to like next leggings but the last lot I bought werelike tights. I'd love a nice thick pair.

revolutionarytoad · 01/06/2014 11:04

Okay, my absolute best pair are American Apparel winter leggings, £38 I think? I know, it's loads, but they truly are in a class of their own. I wear them alll the time, they're super comfortable and don't lose their stretch.

Also Mint Velvet ones, I think they're under £30, are good.

Slightly thinner but still goodish.....Esprit and White Stuff.

Am steering clear of Topshop ones for life now....they're different to how they were a few years ago. The £18 ones I mean. Such a disappointment :(

Never been into bags, I think I'm very low maintenance

Corygal · 01/06/2014 12:31

Make up wise, I scrimp on anything you wash off - ie various cleansers, nail varnish remover - and body lotion because all lotions are basically the same thing.

PeppermintInfusion · 01/06/2014 13:07

Splurge- makeup, skincare (though do buy budget too when I find something that works), underwear, winter wear like coats & boots

Scrimp- beauty treatments (do gel nails, tan, etc all myself), gym clothes, jeans, basic t shirts, most summer clothes

Pollywallywinkles · 01/06/2014 13:32

I'm very mixed on splurge and scrimp. I don't think there is one item that I only splurge or scrimp on.

I've handbags ranging from £5 to Mulberry and Chloe.

Supermarket jewellery to Tiffany.

Just gone from a Mac foundation to a rimmel...my list could go on.

I chop and change and mix and match.

claraschu · 01/06/2014 13:36

Splurge: anything for the children

Scrimp: anything for me

ASmidgeofMidge · 01/06/2014 15:27

Splurge: foundation, mascara, bronzer, lipstick (the last two only because it seems to be the expensive brands that do colours which suit me). Shampoo and conditioner. Moisturiser.

Scrimp: Shower gel, eyeliner /shadow, blusher, nail varnish

TOADfan · 01/06/2014 15:32

Scrimp..Everything.

Spluge..Never.

We are talking £5 max for eye make-up, lipstick, blushers etc. Also all hair products and bath products.

£10 max for foundation.

Clothes.... £20 max on a top, £30 on jeans, £50 on coat and £30 on shoes.

TeaAddict235 · 01/06/2014 16:07

splurge: leather items (bags, boots etc), Jackets (Next), dresses, jumpers, shampoos, hair masks

scrimp: makeup (bought in USA cheaply), nail varnish (rimmel, shops own brands), housewear, tops (h&m, charity stores), underwear (matalan, Primark), daily conditioners (Alberto balsams, L'oreal etc),

SquallyShowers · 01/06/2014 17:00

I spend (dont know if 'splurge' is quite right as dont buy designer stuff) on:

Coats
Boots
The odd good quality dress

Chanel face mask, Nars Illuminator and Smashbox primer are the only high end beauty bits I still buy after a complete overhaul of my beauty spending.
