Where can I buy flattering t-shirts/vest tops & cardi's on the high street

I have just gone through my summer clothes and have a few nice summery cotton skirts that still fit me (I have put on weight and lots of outfits don't fit anymore). I need to get some new plain t-shirts/ vest tops & cardis to go with the skirts. Where can I get some on the high street, that will not cling to my spare tyre. I don't want to spend too much as I am planning to lose some weight, I just need a few outfits to tide me over.

Matalan is coming down with vests, haven't tried any on though. The looked long and thick

YellowStripe · 27/05/2014 18:30

H&M? Next's plain Ts wear well, or good ol' M&S.

StatelyAsAGalleon · 27/05/2014 18:43

I have more spare tyres than Goodyear, but I find these immensely flattering - skim over all the lumps and bumps and don't need to be ironed!

I've just bought a navy cardigan and a bluebell blue tshirt/top from Sainsbos, to go with a navy skirt from Great Plains I bought forgetting that I have nothing to wear with it. Both good quality and fit well, and match the skirt. Lots of sizes too.

YellowStripe · 27/05/2014 19:13

Stately - some of those are lovely. Pity my bra straps will completely ruin the look :/

BlueJean · 27/05/2014 19:23

I'd like to find something with more substantial straps too. I looked online and found this pretty top.

I have yet to find the actual pattern but I would love to make several of these to fit my shape rather than making do with what the shops have on offer. I hate spaghetti straps and stretchy material.

ICantFindAFreeNickName · 27/05/2014 23:10

Thanks for the suggestions so far. The next tops look nice, but I cant have bra straps showing in work. Although I might get one for weekend wear
So far I have Matalan, H&M, Sainsbury's to go and have a look at. I'm not trying m&S as I have found their t-shirts to be rubbish over the last couple of years.
I love the little top that Blue Jean linked to, but I cant sew.

I have bought this from Boden (20% off available) - good coverage of bra straps tho I fear it may be a bit low-necked for my work... It's nice tho, good heavy fabric which fits and avoids being tent-like.

Raia · 27/05/2014 23:26

Another vote for the Boden easy vest top - so flattering!

Lilbup · 28/05/2014 07:00

I've just bought some of these t-shirts from Warehouse and love them.

spottymoo · 28/05/2014 07:46

I got a few vests from matalan and new look both a nice length and thickness straps are a nice width as well.
It's cardigans I'm struggling with their all really crop ones which IMO do nothing for a spare tyre.

somanyclare · 28/05/2014 07:52

Hello! Thank you so much to BlueJean for posting a link to my top - if you'd like to buy the pattern then you can buy it online www.simplicitynewlook.com/6895/#.U4WGtCxOXIU

ICantFindAFreeNickname I'd say that the pattern is suitable for a beginner, so I don't know if you've got someone who could help you out? I hope you find something suitable soon.

Oldraver · 28/05/2014 16:24

ooh somanyclareWhere was the little white cardi from ? its lovely

bouquetofpencils · 28/05/2014 16:37

Cardis - go to Oasis, very classic well cut, lots of colours
Vest tops - H & M have lots of choice. If you want long And very Lycra rich go to Primark, they hold in a tum.
T-shirts I have no idea, never really find any I like so I wear blouses instead.
