Mine were;

Max Factor roll on clear lip gloss in the glass bottle
Rimmel azure blue pearly nail polish
Number 17 orange blossom cleanser (heavenly smell)
Rimmel block mascara (The bees knees - spit and go)
Rimmel frosty blue liquid eye shadow.

I've bought 100s of items over the years but always remember the thrill of these first few purchases........feeling nostalgic today Smile

My very first mascara was a second hand block mascara from a friend's nan [blerk] the sort you spat into and painted on your lashes. It was ancient even back then!

My very first NEW mascara was a Max Factor one that my aunt gave me for my birthday!

SnapeAndLily · 28/05/2014 08:52

Heather shimmer lipstick
Body Shop lip balms
Dewberry perfume (also Body Shop)
A multi make up set thing from Argos - the colours were awful
Collection 2000 mascara

Didn't wear eyeliner till my 20s - my first was Urban Decay. Gutted when they changed the brush shape Sad

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/05/2014 09:00

In every school photo from 13 up I am wearing heather shimmer!

TalcAndTurnips · 28/05/2014 09:11

I remember a fabulous peel-off mask that had a citrus scent - you smeared the sticky gum all over your face and then waited for the exciting moment when it became dry enough for you to lift the edge.

There was an immense scab-like satisfaction at peeling the majority off in one slow attempt, producing a Scream mask-style condom affair and a flaky, dusty face that probably looked worse than before application.

As a teenager I really believed the hype. I believed that Clearasil would spirit away my spots; VO5 apple would eradicate my greasy hair and Boots 17 concealer would deliver a flawless complexion.

Now I'm looking at those Protect & Perfect serum ads and sometimes the rational side of my brain is fooled momentarily. Curses.

I remember that face mask talc and the almost evangelical euphoria you got when it came off in one piece- ish

Evette (woolies own brand along with TU) used to do a wonderful lipliner in a very flattering plum colour which I then ruined by using a pale frosted gloss thinking I was creating the illusion of 'fuller lips'

Gatekeeper · 28/05/2014 09:44

some photos to jog memories ; my sister had that exact eyeshadow pallette

some adverts to jog memories

TalcAndTurnips · 28/05/2014 10:06

Gatekeeper - that picture of Aqua Manda brought back a flood of memories; the smell of the under-sink bathroom cupboard when I was a child. My mother had this and other perfumes of the day - a kindly neighbour was an Avon lady, so there were bottles of Occur!, Moonwind and Charisma.

And the discovery, at the back of the cupboard, of a strange black rubber bulb object. I thought at the time that is was some bizarre sex accoutrement - but now I realise it was just an ear syringe. Confused

Gatekeeper · 28/05/2014 10:21

ah yes..the smell of the undersink cupboard...Old Spice aftershave, Palmolive soap, Pears shampoo, some hair cream stuff me dad wore called "Score" , Coty bath cubes. Also in it were dad's razor and pack of Wilkinson sword blades, gently rusting away in the bathroom fug, a green eyebath thing, sink plunger and a pack of mams Dr White's looped sanitary towels

TalcAndTurnips · 28/05/2014 10:22

Hell's bells - was this ever considered a good look?

I do remember friends who filled the entire lash to brow region in pale blue frosted eyeshadow. Teamed with spidery blue mascara-ed lashes, pink frosted lips and 'face-contouring' streaks of blusher; sculpt monstrous tonged hair flicks sprayed rigid with Sunsilk - bung on your A-line denim skirt and tank top and you were good to go.

can anyone remember Pupa eyeshadows? I had a paintbox type tin of them round about 1981-2..they were very glittery and bright colours of aqua, peach, teal , purple etc. At the time it was de rigueur to wear all of the colours at the same time. Smashin'

TalcAndTurnips · 28/05/2014 16:46

I don't remember Pupa as a brand - but that sounds like the sort of look Toyah was espousing at the time.

Smash Hits was full of pictures of her in all her neon glory; tangerine hair fanned out like a peacock's tail and fluorescent eyes. Sixth form chums attempted the same look but just ended up scaring old ladies on he bus.

It's a mish-tery, oh it's a mish-tery.

Shock < Toyah, TOTP circa 1981

WildBill · 28/05/2014 19:11

I think Pupa is still going isn't it? I'm sure they sell fancy butterfly shaped eye compacts at a perfumers/beauty salon near me

haha yer i had a hair mascara too - in electric blue...

Lazysummerdays · 28/05/2014 20:25

Rimmel lipstick bought around 1968.
Can't remember the shade name but it was a medium pearly pink.
Quickly followed by pearly blue eye shadow and Hide the Blemish.

Then I moved onto the more upmarket Mary Quant and Biba.

Lazysummerdays · 28/05/2014 20:28

Oh yes- Miners and Outdoor Girl bought at Woolies! Miners used to do superb little pots of lip gloss about the size of a 10p piece - anyone else ancient enough to remember them?

And my dad would mutter' you're not going out with that muck on yer face are you?'
yes dad.

ElizabethJennings · 28/05/2014 21:09

Black cherries lipstick and hide the blemish.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 28/05/2014 21:21

A pink sparkly rim meal blusher. Rimmel, ffs. Then a brown mascara nicked borrowed from dm. Various nasty pearly blue eyeshadow. Then miners Panda eyes. Dm thought I had black eyes. Then I discovered biba. Sigh.

bluebump · 28/05/2014 21:24

Rimmel Black Cherry Lipstick.
