or do i just chicken out and wait til after? only dp might be a bit miffed about that as it has been booked now

cheap as possible, i dont want anything remotely meringue-like, dont like pale colours or white (black, red or purple would be good). prefer covered shoulders, and would rather not look like an elephant. tho i appreciate that may not be possible.

any help much appreciated!

empire line is your friend, corset styles are not.
Was about to suggest something along these lines but you foxed me with the no pale colours / covered shoulders. Monsoon have some v pretty empire-line evening dresses in strong colours but all are strapless. A shrug or wrap would work though.

what shape are you apart from bump?

gigglinggoblin · 31/08/2006 15:21

am fairly large anyway, but i seem to remember 20ish weeks is the time when maternity is too big but non maternity is too small. empire line good idea, lol @ friend

love monsoon stuff, that dress is gorgeous. am v blonde and tend to look washed out in pale colours so darker is better. havent seen anything with shoulders but am hoping winter stuff might be out soon

empire line defo. I wore a fairly fully bodied empire line dress, which wasn't remotely merrangue like but was fairly plain with a few lovely flowers on it, sort of like sugar roses but made of folded fabric.
I was 20 weeks exactly on wedding day!

pmsl at pies!

can just see you saying this very seriously in Professional Style Guru mode

gigglinggoblin · 31/08/2006 15:38

so empire line is def way to go then. anything that makes me look like i havent eaten all the pies is excellent as i have def had a few too many! (plus last baby bump is still hanging around a bit)

not sure i will have time to get anything specially made, have only got about 6 weeks, was a now or never kind of decision. suppose i could get something altered if i bought it a size too big and had it taken in everywhere but bump, would that work?

I got married at 23 weeks this July, and wore an empire line dress over a pair of white jersey trousers (I'd never usually do the dress over trousers thing, but it worked well as a pregnancy thing). I am not small even when not pregnant and only look like an elephant in the pictures which don't show my legs.

If you can find any good independent maternity boutiques around you, they are by far the best places to get stuff as they have lots of nice Italian and French pieces. My dress (and another, lovely, orange dress that I almost bought) came from La Conception in Battersea - they were really helpful and not at all snooty (and my dress was under £150!). They are here and have loads more stuff in real life than on the website. Push in Islington were also lovely - but don't go to Blossom in South Ken, everything there was £500 and designed for stick insects. I nearly cried.

In fact, what size are you? Because I am not going to use my dress again this pregnancy, and it is red and pink with small sleeves and an empire line, and fitted over my GIANT bust....

robinpud · 31/08/2006 15:51

I have a lovely dress I wore with a little extra room at the front iyswim It was my first so didn't really show until after 22 weeks!

gigglinggoblin · 31/08/2006 15:52

am size 18 but dont have a giant bust, that is upsettingly normal sized. its my massive hips and jelly belly thats the problem! will have a look around for independant places, unfortunately am miles away from london, too far even to travel for the day but it might be worth looking round manchester. that website does look lovely i suppose something like a pretty top with a long skirt could work.

i got married at 20 weeks roughly and i had brought a dress and just got it altered every 2 weeks

good luck

gigglinggoblin · 31/08/2006 16:03

i do actually have a friend i havent seen for a while who makes all her own clothes (shes doing some sort of textile thing at uni and is v good), might be worth getting in touch.

i think im just a bit lost, i dont realy like shopping for maternity clothes at the best of times, but finding something really nice is going to be even harder. i think long skirt could be the best idea. thanks for all the suggestions!

Or maybe (and perhaps am being completely inappropriate here) a theatrical costumiers? For a lovely Pride and Prejudice style frock which will be covered across the shoulders?
Angels are good and there are a whole pile of others: here
Congrats on both bits of news by the way!

twocatsonthebed · 31/08/2006 17:08

There must be a good boutique in Manchester - are there any Mancunians on here who can advise?

The other thing on the La Conception website - which I also tried on but didn't in the end go for - are those lovely embroidered glittery indian tunic tops. One of those over a white skirt would look stunning, esp with a contrasting throw round your shoulders in case it gets cold.

Oh, and another thought, my last resort was going to be this shower who hire out stuff. Have linked to one of their pages, as the front one doesn't seem to be working - but they have stuff in a good range of sizes and it looked lovely.
