Prom outfit for girl who hates dresses

NickyEds · 21/05/2014 14:25

My lovely niece has her prom next month and is seriously considering not going because she doesn't know what to wear. She hates dresses, anything girly or revealing, anything strappy, showing her arms or shoulders and generally ALL prom clothes. Me and her mum are taking her shopping next week-budget can be pretty generous (her brother got a £200 suit) Any suggestions??

How about a nice all in one/cat suit or dressy playsuit - would she wear something like that?

WowOoo · 21/05/2014 14:34

Couldn't she get nice trousers and a top she likes?
She can wear them again then too.

Tell her it's great to be different! I hope she finds something acceptably cool. Smile

squoosh · 21/05/2014 14:44

I think a playsuit would look quite cool and stand out well against all the (tacky) prom dresses.

MrsCakesPremonition · 21/05/2014 14:51

Topshop have got satin trousers in a few colours. With a nice top or jacket?
I think they have pink suit too...

FauxFox · 21/05/2014 15:22

What size/bodyshape is she? Is it a tomboy thing or an insecurity thing?

jumpsuit
lace jumpsuit
colour block

May I say though that if this is already a stress point a day of shopping with you and her mum will most probably be her idea of hell. There will be tears. I would strongly suggest you spend some time online instead and order a load of stuff for her to try on at home.

FauxFox · 21/05/2014 15:25

Does she wear heels? A slouchy dress could be dressed up with pretty sandals or heels and some jewellery?

RonaldMcDonald · 21/05/2014 15:29

kate moss pjs vair cool

LadySybilVimes · 21/05/2014 15:31

Could she get one of the asian outfits that are a pair of trousers and a top. They are often really beautiful but significantly more practical and comfortable than a dress.

drspouse · 21/05/2014 15:42

Tux plus camisole?

newnameforanewstart · 21/05/2014 15:43

What about something like this

Chinese Jacket

Over tuxedo trousers or palazzo pants?

Or what about going for a Ladies Tuxedo Suit?

Or a Something LIKE this

Saree trouser suit

ThePrisonerOfAzkaban · 21/05/2014 15:45

Cat or play suit? Would she wear a skirt? Or some tailored shorts?

newnameforanewstart · 21/05/2014 15:46

ARH

Or this

Believe this is called a Kameez suit sorry if I am wrong

Or

Think this is call Patialla Again sorry if i am wrong

I LOVE saree trouser suits and tuxedos on women think they can look amazing and I have worn both more than once to a black tie ball as I find it difficult to find a dress I love.

What sort of things does she LIKE? Maybe we can point you in the direction of something fab and different.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 21/05/2014 15:47

YY, go for a tux. I wore one to my leaver's ball and I felt great (I wasn't a dressy girl back then).

mrsbucketxx · 21/05/2014 15:48

yet tailored tux will heel would look fab

SolidGoldBrass · 21/05/2014 15:51

Tailcoat and trousers type outfit, definitely. If a girl doesn't want to look girly, it's great to find a way she can look smart when she is going somewhere formal.

BumWad · 21/05/2014 15:53

river island jumpsuit

Lipsy jumpsuit

newnameforanewstart · 21/05/2014 15:58

what about this

play suit teamed with a really exotic (you can get some stunning ones) kimono jacket?

NickyEds · 21/05/2014 16:07

Jumpsuits sound like quite a good idea. She generally wears jogging bottoms/brothers hand-me-downs/PJs/hoodies. Clothes just don't seem to be of any real concern to her- she just likes to be comfy!!
FauxFox- she's a size 10- could wear anything she wanted really. I think it's part genuinely not caring about clothes and part not wanting to be seen to care about clothes. TBH a days shopping is my nightmare too- that's sort of why I'm going but my sister has got it into her head that we ARE going to have a lovely day- I've promised niece frequent stops for cake and that she won't have to wear a dress. She will absolutely NOT wear heels. Or have her hair straightened. Or tolerate us crying if she looks nice.
I love that she's cool but it would be such a shame if she missed out because she can't find anything to wear.
Will try the jumpsuit idea on herSmile

Oh sorry me again!

Black and white jacket I am in love with this right now the collar reminds me of a princess jacket and paired with a black trouser and heals I think it could look amazing. I have long hair and would probably do a soft chop stick bun too!

NickyEds · 21/05/2014 16:13

I want the black and white jacket for meSmile
