How to wear this Wallis dress

I'm going to a wedding on Friday, and have this dress from Wallis which I plan to wear.

I'm hopeless re fashion and wondered if anyone could advise on how to accessorize it. Would you stick with black and white or add a colour, say red?

I'd add a wide belt at the waist, cropped shrug and shoes all in the same colour, maybe scarlet, fiery pink or nude.

There are some fantastic heels in Clarks of all places right now - in nude, black, red, orange and royal blue. Under £50 and padded insoles so you can walk in them all day without feeling the strain of being in heels.

Cropped shrugs in every colour imaginable are on Amazon for £5 or less. You could probably get a wide belt there too. The shrugs are wafer thin but look good on, and I've seen that dress in Wallis irl - it's a delicate fabric so should work well with them.

I'd also add a chunky cuff rather than jewellery round the neck as that's a tricky neckline to dress.

Would that work?

Thanks for those ideas threedeer. I'll go and investigate now!

Gah! Just found some nice bits on Amazon but can't get them delivered before Friday. A wee trip to the Trafford Centre tomorrow may be in order!

Any more inspiration to help me on my way is most appreciated!

It has a pattern on it, so I would keep accessories to a minimum. Light shrug in black, a black clutch bag with maybe a white contrast detail and fairly dainty/not to heavy black heels and nude legs/nude colour tights. Let the dress do the work, too much colour or too many details will compete with the pattern on the dress. Oh and have fun.

Thanks Mini. I was thinking of adding some red to it (I already bought some red lippy and nail varnish for example) - do you think this would be too much?

Seriously, I'm totally clueless and in need of savvy advice!

The red lippy and nails would compliment it beautifully. An accent colour should be kept to the minimum for maximum effect. The nails/lippy in bright red is perfect and always looks fab with monochrome.

Oh and smile, have confidence, you'll look knock em out!

Fretful · 20/05/2014 20:59

Ha, not sure about knock 'em out, but any amount of confidence would be a bonus! Would you keep everything else (shoes, bag etc) muted in the case of red make up? Thanks again Smile

I'm not sure about wearing so much black to a wedding though (if you go with black shrug and shoes.) Think it needs another colour to offset it.

Please don't put a shrug - or any other kind or cardigan (for a shrug is a cardi by another name) - with this. You will kill the shape.

I'd do red heels, bare legs, red nails and red lipstick and a black clutch that had a touch of red about it.

But please - I implore you - don't wear a cardi / shrug unless you want to look like you're off to meet a mate for a coffee.

Well, I went shopping today and picked up some fab red heels from Dorothy Perkins (for just £13 in the sale), a black clutch (and a red flower which I'll attach to it), and some red bangles. I'm pretty chuffed and think I might actually look okay on Friday!

Thanks again, folks, I really do appreciate it!
