Colouring hair blonde at home

I have hair the colour of a dead mouse. I usually have my roots done with half head of highlights. It looks v blonde but I can't afford the upkeep right now.
I used to use a herbal essences hair colour but it's discontinued. I think it was called xl10 dazzling moonlight.
There are lots around & don't mind doing a patch test etc but don't want to buy lots to try. I like slightly champagney beige tone of very high lift, with no yellow.
I would appreciate some recommendations.

You probably don't want to hear it but I wouldn't do it at home. It will never look as good as when a hairdresser does it and you can really damage your hair.

I've been tempted in the past but any attempt has looked pretty awful! If you do go ahead though, I would recommend getting a natural looking brown colour to go over it in case you don't like the result. Nothing like wearing the only hat you can find (wooly beany) to get hair dye from Boots in the summer and looking like a twat!

Do your research - you will have to lighten (bleach) and tone to get a champagne colour, I think.
