This dress for a black tie do?

I already have this dress and am wondering whether I can bling it up for a black tie do? The do is in the evening in June so might be warmish. I'm not at all keen on my upper arms (or indeed the rest of my somewhat overweight body to be honest) but I do love this dress.

Any suggestions for styling it please?

TBH I think probably a bit too casual for black tie - lovely for a cocktail event or a wedding, but black tie is I think a bit more formal.

Hmmm, I was afraid that might be the case! Booo...

I wouldn't wear that for black tie.

Crutchlow35 · 16/05/2014 18:44

Black tie no. Sorry.

Not smart enough. Check out charity shops?

Well, you can wear cocktail length for black tie (but never for white tie), I think this might be pushing it too far though, unfortunately. You'd need to be utterly and immaculately groomed, be able to function entirely normally in vertiginous heels and be prepared to style it out if your the only one in a cocktail dress.

Does that sound doable?

It depends on the event. Some black tie events are relatively casual, some are more formal. But that is borderline, absolutely. The fact it's silk makes it a bit more dressy, but still ...

I went to a black tie event last week and women were wearing all sorts of dresses in all sorts of lengths. If you think you can carry it off, go for it!

BunnyPotter · 16/05/2014 19:14

Another no here. Lovely dress though!

imnottoofussed · 16/05/2014 19:24

Beautiful dress but I'd say no for this event

rockybalboa · 17/05/2014 11:52

It's a celebration dinner rather than a ball or anything like that so I'll be sitting down for most of it other than the drinks at the beginning I'd have thought.

It is definitely more of a cocktail/wedding type dress which I why I bought it tbh. I was just hoping I could style it up to make it black tie blingy. But possibly not. Gah. Off to ASOS I go...
