If the next harem trousers look awful on me...

Will any of the other types (hush etc) look good or do I just have to avoid that style altogether? They make my hips look even bigger than they are!

If it helps I'm 5'9 and a size 14.

Thanks!

I got the black New Look ones, kind of silky feeling material. I think they are very flattering and I'm a 16!

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 08/05/2014 16:17

I bought a size down and they fitted much nicer

nomoreminibreaks · 08/05/2014 19:52

Good tips. Thanks! I'll try both.

i tried next harems last year and they looked awful on me too, like i was wearing a nappy.

OhCobblers · 09/05/2014 23:42

H&M have some in their Basics range.

EduardoBarcelona · 10/05/2014 04:54

No. You're a size 14. IMO only suit the willowy

LightastheBreeze · 10/05/2014 06:19

I'm 5'10" and size 12-14 and that style looks awful on me, makes me look huge also.

I tend to suit straight legged trousers and jeans.

Onsera3 · 10/05/2014 07:18

I had to go a size up. Size 10 jeans and leggings fit well from there but the harems had to be pulled up or the band squished my tummy. Exchanged for size 12 which sit just below belly button and look much better.

Where was the top of your band sitting?

nomoreminibreaks · 10/05/2014 12:12

I think the waistband was around my belly button. They were very comfy and I considered getting a pair to slob around the house in but they looked so bad I don't think I'd answer the door in them!!

If its any consolation, I got them in an 8 (next vanity sizing, I am not an 8) and I don't think i'll leave the house in them either. Well I did once just to pick one of the kids up from a friends on a Sunday afternoon, DS got in the car and said 'Mum why are you in your pyjamas?' Grin
That's kinda put me off but they're super comfy for lazy Sundays/chucking on when I get in from work, so I'm keeping them.

The Dorothy Perkins joggers are really flattering, lots of different colours too, they often have a discount code kicking around if you sign up for the emails.

I'm wearing the Next smudge print ones today and they look pretty good. Just had a spray tan so needed a loose trouser. Wearing them with a navy vest top. I'm a size 8 and I think the patterned fabric helps to disguise any potential nappy bum issues. I wouldn't wear plain ones.

My legs aren't fit for showing off either (varicose veins) so harem trousers are a nice alternative to a maxi dress this summer!

What are you all wearing on top with harems?

pictish · 10/05/2014 20:09

Sooooo want to do harems, and so very can't. Long back short legs here. I don't think you have to be willowy to pull them off, but long legs are essential.

Flossiechops · 10/05/2014 20:12

I have the Hush ones in black. I'm 5ft 3in and a size 12. I think they look fine. Usually team them up with sandals, converse or ballet pumps. The Hush ones are great as the materials lovely & thick. Go for it you can always send them back Smile

pictish · 10/05/2014 20:17

I don't think it's to do with height or size so much as proportion. I have stumpy short assed legs, so harem pants make me look like a toddler.

nomoreminibreaks · 10/05/2014 20:46

You see that's why I feel a bit cheated - while I'm not willowy I do have long legs and my saddlebags aren't that bad since I was pregnant with DS2 and all the weight moved to my belly. But my legs looked so triangular!

i'm a 14 and they look okay but prefer the basic cotton jogger type style

don't pay over the odds at hush etc there are tons on the high st which are just as nice, i got some from izabel last year and they're really fab

dottyaboutstripes · 10/05/2014 21:31

I tried them today and they were HIDEOUS on me, I was so disappointed. But to be fair I was well out of my comfort zone in them anyway because they were just so, erm, COMFORTABLE! Felt so wrong and looked even worse!

chickydoo · 10/05/2014 23:17

I've got the Sweaty Betty harem skirt, looks amazing!
