Any PR girls / former PR employees on here?

Thanks for reading. Have a very short notice interview on Friday at a huge PR company near the Square Mile. Although I'm not a new grad (I'm 40) it could lead to working on client accounts.

I've always worked and interviewed in dark suits, but need to look young and on trend for the interview but also professional.

Stats: 5'4, size 16, good bust and face, dreadful legs, long blonde flicky hair. Please tell me what PR professionals wear as I'm frozen in black-suit paralysis!

Many thanks in advance!

What type of clients? Is it financial PR? What type of role are you applying for?

Mrsreuben · 07/05/2014 16:15

It's an entry level role, organising the 'Arts' team in a huge PR firm, probably the biggest. Lots of admin but also Events, client meetings, firm wide networking. They have a financial team but this is a different area.

Thank you!

Not in PR, but know several people who are.

FYI, they're not called "PR girls", however young and lowly. They're called publicists.

Black is fine, it's the media and marketing uniform. Just wear the black trousers you already have, and then some kind of tailored white, grey or printed top. All Saints is not cheap but they do Helmut Lang and Vivienne Westwood styles which look great. Then a tailored jacket - though not your suit jacket - over the top. Zara is probably the best for interesting jackets.

Accessorise with bold jewellery, a good bag and heels, and excellent personal presentation.

Black suit will be fine but maybe brighten up with an orange top or scarf. Good luck!

Thank you, especially for the help re semantics - it really is a different world!

Tailored jacket but not suited is exactly my holy grail.

Right. I work in consumer PR so not that far off.

Dress code seems to have become increasingly casual, so I can understand your reluctance to pitch up in your black suit.

BUT, given you don't like your legs and the weather, how about a black trouser suit but with really modern accessories/shoes/shirt? Could you bear to get a big clutch-style handbag, gold cuff and possibly statement necklace to wear with the suit and a silk top/shirt? Or ditch the suit jacket so you don't look so formal - wear a coat over the top.

The other thing is, if you have to travel to get there (tube etc) you want something that doesn't look crumpled and dirty by the time you arrive.

All that said, as it's PR it will be how you sell yourself, so just steam in there and dazzle them! Good luck - I work in-house but obviously know a bit about agencies so PM me if you have any other questions that I may be able to help with.

I bought: a sort of brown, holey hand bag with blue lining. big silver and turquoise necklace , bangle with pearl stops, two Cartier style bangles. I feel like I'm in Grazia!
